Multi-level optimisation of composite structures through a global-local modelling approach based on high-order theories

Marco Montemurro et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an original multi-level optimization method that integrates a global-local approach based on higher-order theories for the design of composite structures. The method achieves a good balance between accuracy and computational costs. The proposed method involves two nested optimization loops, with the outer loop focusing on the macroscopic scale and the inner loop searching for optimized stacking sequences at the ply-level. The method is applied to the design of a simplified wing-box structure considering mechanical and technological requirements.

Nonlinear vibration of functionally graded magneto-electro-elastic higher order plates reinforced by CNTs using FEM

Vinyas Mahesh et al.

Summary: This article proposes a finite-element formulation based on higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT) to evaluate the nonlinear frequency characteristics of carbon nanotube reinforced magneto-electro-elastic (CNTMEE) plates. The effects of electro-magnetic circuits on the nonlinear coupled behavior of CNTMEE plates are investigated for the first time in the literature. The study reveals the influence of coupling fields on the nonlinear frequency response of CNTMEE plates by considering different forms of CNT distributions and adjusting parameters.

Effect of porosity on active damping of geometrically nonlinear vibrations of a functionally graded magneto-electro-elastic plate

L. Sh Esayas et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of porosity on active damping of geometrically nonlinear vibrations of functionally graded plates. The study analyzes the impact of factors such as porosity distribution, material gradation, and boundary conditions on the damping performance. The results demonstrate that porosity significantly influences the nonlinear behavior and damping performance of the graded plates.

Static and dynamic NURBS-based isogeometric analysis of composite plates under hygrothermal environment

Abha Gupta et al.

Summary: In this paper, a computationally efficient isogeometric plate model is proposed for the analysis of laminated and sandwich composite plates under hygrothermal environment. Nonpolynomial shear deformation theory and fast Fourier transformation are used to obtain transient and steady-state responses. The results show that the consideration of Green-Lagrange strain relationship is important for better accuracy at higher temperatures.

Free vibration characteristic analysis of functionally graded shells with porosity and neutral surface effects

Pham Toan Thang et al.

Summary: This paper presents an analytical approach for analyzing the free vibration characteristic of FG cylindrical thin and thick shells considering simultaneously the effect of porosities and the neutral surface. Both CST and SDST are utilized to derive governing equations for the free vibration problem, and the natural frequencies of FG cylindrical shells with porosities are obtained using the Navier solution. The results are confirmed by comparison with existing data while examining the effects of the neutral surface, material parameter, and mode vibration on the natural frequencies.

Yang Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, 3D representative volume element models with microchannels were established based on measured data. The effects of different microvascular parameters on the tensile and compressive properties of composites were studied, and the damage pattern of carbon fiber under the force was analyzed. The models were verified by testing and experiments, and the research results have practical application in the design and analysis of CFRP laminates with similar microchannel structures.

Layerwise Theories of Laminated Composite Structures and Their Applications: A Review

Dinghe Li

Summary: Analyzing the displacement and stress fields in laminated composite structures is challenging due to transverse anisotropy and higher transverse flexibilities. Equivalent single-layer theory (EST) simplifies the problem to a pure 2D problem with good global response but poor local response, while 3D displacement-based FEM provides accurate results with high computational cost. Layerwise theories (LWT) offer a more accurate and efficient solution between EST and 3D FEM, making it more popular with advances in computer technology.

Buckling and postbuckling response of nonlocal strain gradient porous functionally graded micro/nano-plates via NURBS-based isogeometric analysis

Fan Fan et al.

Summary: The study shows that considering geometric nonlinearity and moving to deeper part of the postbuckling regime reduces the significance of both nonlocality and strain gradient size dependencies. Additionally, increasing the material property gradient index results in an enhancement of nonlocal and strain gradient size effects, especially in the deeper part of the postbuckling domain. Moreover, the study demonstrates that the porosity index has a negligible influence on the significance of size dependencies for a PFGM micro/nano-plate, regardless of the boundary conditions.
