WebMO: Web-based computational chemistry calculations in education and research

William F. Polik et al.

Summary: WebMO is a web-based interface for major quantum chemistry programs, utilizing a server-client architecture to provide access to computational chemistry programs from a standard web browser. It offers tools such as a 3-D molecular editor, pre-defined calculation types, job submission and monitoring, visualization of results, and user management tools. The universal accessibility and uniform interface of WebMO minimize barriers to using advanced computational chemistry in teaching and research.

Chain Formation during Hydrogen Loss and Reconstruction in Carbon Nanobelts

Yuri Tanuma et al.

Summary: In this study, we used laser-induced vaporisation to evaporate and ionise carbon nanobelts and analysed the resultant ions through mass-spectrometry. We simulated systematic hydrogen-loss studies and found that the initial hydrogen loss led to the formation of carbyne chains and pentagon-chains while maintaining the nanobelt rings. However, the alternative routes towards the formation of closed-cages were shown to be less stable than chain formation and were not observed experimentally. These results provide important insights into the collision degradation routes of curved molecular carbon species and their implications in astrochemical environments.

First-principles investigation of interaction between the atomic oxygen species and carbon nanostructures

Yulia G. Polynskaya et al.

Summary: In this study, a systematic theoretical investigation of the oxidation process of various carbon nanomaterials by atomic oxygen was conducted. First-principles calculations were employed to understand the atomistic interaction mechanism between atomic oxygen and carbon nanostructures and provide explanations for experimental findings on oxygen treatment. The influence of the spin state of atomic oxygen on its interaction with different carbon nanostructures was explored. It was discovered that the structure and stability of the adsorption complexes are determined by the oxygen spin state and depend on the morphology and hybridization of the carbon nanostructures. The atomistic mechanisms of chemical transformations, such as CO/CO2 desorption and graphene unzipping, driven by high local oxygen coverage were investigated.

Electronic Properties of Carbon Nanobelts Predicted by Thermally-Assisted-Occupation DFT

Sonai Seenithurai et al.

Summary: By utilizing TAO-DFT, the electronic properties of C-Belt[n] with singlet ground states were investigated, showing a more pronounced MR character as the size of C-Belt[n] increased. The active TAO-orbitals were found to be delocalized along the circumference of C-Belt[n].

Transformation of a graphene nanoribbon into a hybrid 1D nanoobject with alternating double chains and polycyclic regions

Alexander S. Sinitsa et al.

Summary: This study investigates the transformation mechanism of a graphene nanoribbon into a hybrid 1D nanoobject under electron irradiation, proposing a synthetic scheme for such transformation. The atomistic mechanism and electronic properties of the new nanostructure are explored through simulations and theoretical calculations, revealing potential applications in nanoelectronics and spintronics.
