Urooj Kamran et al.

Summary: In this study, sustainable nanocomposites were successfully prepared from agriculture waste (rice husk)-derived biochar precursor, and loaded with nickel-doped, base-treated titanium dioxide nanomaterials for efficient lead (Pb2+) removal from aqueous media. The optimized sample (Ni0.01@Na-TiO2/BC) exhibited a high Pb2+ adsorption capability of 122.3 mg g(-1) under the optimum adsorption conditions, attributed to its specific surface area and excess functional sites. The kinetic and isothermal examinations showed that the adsorption of Pb2+ followed pseudo 2nd order and Langmuir models. Furthermore, the optimized sample demonstrated superior adsorption selectivity for Pb2+ ions in a multi-metallic system compared to other ions.

Misinterpretation of Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm and its implications on adsorption parameter estimates

Biswanath Mahanty et al.

Summary: The Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm is still widely used in solid/liquid interface adsorption models. However, the adsorption potential (epsilon) is often expressed in a dimensionally inconsistent form, instead of the correct form. Despite being pointed out by Hu and Zhang (2019), the incorrect use of the isotherm continues, with only a few articles referring to the correct form and source of required solubility (C-s) data. Modeling using datasets from three selected references indicates that using the incorrect expression would have variable impact on maximum adsorption capacity estimates, while consistently overestimating the sorption energy.

Assessment of urban river water pollution with urbanization in East Africa

Sophia Shuang Chen et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic pollution has significant impact on river water quality, especially in urban areas of Africa. This study evaluated the impact of urbanization on the water quality of four urban rivers in Tanzania through water quality index and statistical analysis. The results showed that the water quality was significantly deteriorated in the lower reaches of the cities, indicating pollution characteristics in urban rivers of Africa. Some river sections had medium to good water quality, but the decline was mainly observed in the urban central areas, indicating a growing pollution tendency with the increasing population. Therefore, timely monitoring of surface water quality with an economical and feasible method is necessary to formulate water pollution control policies in response to rapid urban expansion in African countries.

Measurement and modelling of the intra-particle diffusion and b-term in reversed-phase liquid chromatography

Experimental procedures and models are used to predict intra-particle diffusion and confirm that both adsorption- and partition-type models accurately simulate the behavior of test compounds. The major contributor to the intra-particle diffusion of retained compounds is the diffusion analytes undergo in the organic-modifier enriched zone surrounding the alkyl chains (partition model) or when adsorbed onto the alkyl chains (adsorption model), highlighting the role of surface diffusion in mass transfer in chromatography columns.
