Green Alternatives as Antimicrobial Agents in Mitigating Periodontal Diseases: A Narrative Review

Seyed Ali Mosaddad et al.

Summary: Periodontal diseases and dental caries are common infectious oral diseases globally, affecting oral health. The oral microbiome and oral infectious diseases are strongly correlated. Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria are associated with periodontal diseases. Due to several limitations in antimicrobial medications, lack of resources, prevalence of oral inflammatory conditions, and antibiotic resistance, alternative solutions for periodontal diseases are needed. Natural phytochemicals from plants offer potential alternatives. This review focuses on phytochemicals or herbal extracts that impact periodontal diseases by reducing biofilms and plaques, inhibiting oral pathogens, and preventing bacterial adhesion.

Nanomaterials-mediated photodynamic therapy and its applications in treating oral diseases

Ruijiao Yan et al.

Summary: Oral diseases, such as dental caries, periodontitis and oral cancer, are commonly caused by bacterial infections or malignant cell proliferation. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an effective treatment for these diseases as it can be easily applied to superficial lesions and has antimicrobial and anticancer properties. However, the use of photosensitizers (PSs) in PDT is limited by their low solubility and stability. Recent advances in nanomedicine-based PDT have addressed these limitations by utilizing functionalized nanomaterials as carriers or direct PSs, thereby enhancing the efficacy of PDT. This review provides a comprehensive understanding of different oral diseases and discusses the potential applications of nanomedicine-based PDT in their treatment, as well as the concerns and possible solutions for nanomaterials-mediated PDT.
