One-stop rapid decomplexation and copper capture of Cu(II)-EDTA with nanoscale zero valent iron

Xingyue Zou et al.

Summary: Heavy metal complexes in industrial wastewater pose a significant threat to public health. Conventional treatment usually involves a two-step process of advanced oxidation and precipitation. In this study, a one-stop technique using nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) was developed for simultaneous Cu(II)-EDTA decomplexation and copper capture. This technique was effective across a broad pH range and could remove Cu complexes from actual wastewater, meeting discharge standards. It provides a facile method for the destruction of Cu(II)-EDTA and capture of Cu, and offers insights into the decomplexation mechanism of heavy metal wastewater.

Oxalated zero valent iron enables highly efficient heterogeneous Fenton reaction by self-adapting pH and accelerating proton cycle

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the shell of zero-valent iron (ZVI) was modified with highly proton-conductive FeC(2)O4.2H2O by ball-milling, which enabled ZVI to exhibit efficient Fenton reactivity. The modified ZVI showed high activity stability during 13 successive cycles and could be used across a wide pH range. This study clarified the significance of proton transfer on the reactivity of ZVI and provided an efficient strategy for achieving highly efficient and robust heterogeneous Fenton reactions of ZVI.

Ball milling enhanced Cr(VI) removal of zero-valent iron biochar composites: Functional groups response and dominant reduction species

Jinlan Zhang et al.

Summary: Ball milling technique was introduced to modify Zero-valent iron biochar composites (ZVI/BC) for the removal of Cr(VI). Results showed that the maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) increased 2.08 times after ball milling. The initial adsorption rate also significantly increased. The improved dispersion of ZVI, enhanced contact between ZVI and biochar, and increased oxygen-containing functional groups in biochar contributed to the enhanced removal of Cr(VI).

Precise decomplexation of Cr(III)-EDTA and in-situ Cr(III) removal with oxalated zero-valent iron

Minzi Liao et al.

Summary: Oxalated zero-valent iron (Ox-ZVI) efficiently removes Cr(III)-organic complexes without producing toxic Cr(VI). It selectively breaks the Cr-O and Cr-N bonds of Cr(III)-EDTA complexes without generating Cr(VI), achieving 95.4% decomplexation and 94.2% removal of total Cr. The study highlights the importance of adjusting reactive species for precise pollutant control and provides a green and facile method for Cr(III)-organic complexes treatment.

Water Enables Lattice Oxygen Activation of Transition Metal Oxides for Volatile Organic Compound Oxidation

Huayu Gu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the mechanism of water in lattice oxygen activation of transition metal oxides. It demonstrates that water molecules can activate lattice oxygen to form hydroxyl species and attack electron-deficient carbon atoms of VOCs due to their strong nucleophilicity. This research is of great significance for understanding the role of water in catalysis, such as VOC combustion and water splitting.

Efficient removal of EDTA-chelated Cu(II) by zero-valent iron and peroxydisulfate: Mutual activation process

Liu Fei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of zero-valent iron activated peroxidized sulphate (ZVI/PDS) synergistic action for the effective removal of EDTA-chelated copper. The results show that the ZVI/PDS process significantly improves the removal efficiency of complexed copper and total organic carbon compared to ZVI alone. Factors such as the molar ratio, initial pH, ZVI dosage, and PDS dosage influence the removal efficiency of complexed copper. Analysis indicates that the method can reduce chelated copper and immobilize it on the ZVI surface.

Enabling simultaneous redox transformation of toxic chromium(VI) and arsenic(III) in aqueous media-A review

Yu Fu et al.

Summary: The simultaneous conversion of As(III) and Cr(VI) to their less toxic forms is beneficial for the environment and cost-effective. The mechanisms for the oxidation of As(III) and reduction of Cr(VI) through different processes have been explored. Acidity has a positive effect on co-conversion, while the mediated electron transfer process is not significantly affected by dissolved oxygen. Organic compounds may influence the conversion process.
