Effect of ionic liquid on structure and properties of carbon black filled natural rubber vulcanizates

Junwei Zhou et al.

Summary: This study introduced an ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, into carbon black/natural rubber nanocomposites to regulate the microstructure and viscoelasticity. The results showed that the ionic liquid could enhance vulcanization, improve polysulfide crosslinking bonds, and promote carbon black dispersity without significantly affecting crosslinking density. Furthermore, the ionic liquid weakened the Mullins effect by reducing dissipation and softening energies, and at a certain carbon black volume fraction, it improved tensile strength and extensibility while weakening the Mullins effect simultaneously. This investigation provides insight into tailoring the elasticity and dissipation of vulcanizate nanocomposites.

Tailoring reinforcement and strain softening behaviors of natural rubber vulcanizates nanocomposites by dopamine-modified silica

Yihu Song et al.

Summary: Dopamine modified silica is used to fill natural rubber vulcanizate for tailoring elasticity, strength and softening behaviors. The modified silica improves crosslinking density, filler dispersity, and tensile strength and extensibility of the nanocomposites, while weakening the dissipation and softening effects. The study contributes to the development of high-performance rubber nanocomposites with reduced volatile organic compounds emissions.

Energy Efficiency of the Vulcanization Process of a Bicycle Tyre

Lohit Kumar Pentakota et al.

Summary: The production of tyres is a highly energy-consuming activity in the rubber sector, with curing operations accounting for the largest energy loss due to the extensive use of steam. This study fills the gap in the literature by estimating the energy efficiency of a tyre vulcanization press using a comprehensive model. The model predicts energy transfers in the press during a full process cycle and shows that the actual energy consumed by the tyre for its reticulation process is less than 1% of the total energy expenditure. The paper highlights the urgent need for electrification conversion in the traditional steam-based processes of the tyre industry.

A novel material based on deep eutectic solvents and its application in in-situ modified silica-reinforced styrene-butadiene rubber

Liping Wei et al.

Summary: In the production of Green tires, achieving high-performance rubber composites requires good dispersion of silica, which can be improved through the use of ionic liquids. However, recent research has shown that ionic liquids are harmful to the environment and expensive. In this study, a new solvent called deep eutectic solvents (DESs) was successfully synthesized and used to enhance the dispersion of silica in styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds. The results showed that DESs effectively improved the dispersion of silica and strengthened the interaction between silica and SBR chains, leading to improved overall performance of the rubber vulcanizates.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of deep eutectic solvent (DES) modified silica on the properties of nature rubber (NR) composites. It was found that DES can interact with silica by hydrogen bond to improve the compatibility between rubber and silica, and the proper content of DES can increase the mechanical properties of the composites, reduce rolling resistance, and maintain good wet skid resistance.

Volatile organic compounds emission in the rubber products manufacturing processes

Haimei Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from rubber product manufacturing processes in four factories in China. The species profile and contribution to photochemical ozone formation potential (OFP) and carcinogenic risk (CR) were analyzed for each process. The results showed that mixing process released VOCs with high carcinogenic risk, while vulcanization process emitted VOCs with high photochemical ozone formation potential.

Yi Herng Chan et al.

Summary: This review discusses the state-of-the-art technologies for the capture and removal of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from various emitting sources. The most established technology for fine removal of H2S is metal oxide-based sorbent adsorption, while solvent absorption is mature for bulk removal of CO2 and H2S simultaneously. The article outlines the strengths, limitations, technological gaps, and future directions for each technology. It also comprehensively compares established carbon capture technologies in the simultaneous and selective removal of H2S-CO2, highlighting the need for extensive research in this area.

Strain Softening of Bimodal Isoprene Rubber Vulcanizates

Fengyi Hou et al.

Summary: This study examines the vulcanizates of IR/liquid isoprene rubber bimodal blends and finds that compared to pure IR networks, bimodal networks exhibit lower loss modulus and loss tangent during oscillational shear at low strain amplitudes, as well as reduced loading-unloading dissipation energy during cyclic tensile deformation at large strains, attributed to the weakened strain-induced crystallization (SIC). This work offers a new perspective for preparing rubber materials with balanced deformation resistance and mechanical hysteresis.

Summary: The addition of liquid isoprene rubber (LR) to isoprene rubber (IR)/liquid isoprene rubber (LR) blend nanocomposites can enhance the frequency sensitivity of loss modulus, reduce critical strain amplitude for strain softening behaviors, and decrease mechanical hysteresis. This study provides insights for manufacturing nanocomposite vulcanizates with balanced mechanical hysteresis and reinforcement effect.
