Additionally, four plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) that can enhance the salt tolerance of the rice cultivar were isolated and characterized.

Glycine betaine increases salt tolerance in maize (Zea mays L.) by regulating Na+ homeostasis

Summary: Improving crop salt tolerance is crucial for meeting future food demands in the face of climate change. This study reveals that glycine betaine (GB) plays a critical role in enhancing maize salt tolerance by regulating plant Na+ homeostasis. Treatment with GB significantly improved the growth of maize plants under non-stressed and salinity-stressed conditions, maintained chlorophyll fluorescence properties, and increased antioxidant enzyme activity. GB reduced Na+ accumulation in plants primarily through increasing Na+ efflux and decreasing Na+/K+ ratio. The study also found that GB enhances PM H+-ATPases gene transcription and protein activities, contributing to improved maize salt tolerance.
