Low phosphorus promotes NSP1-NSP2 heterodimerization to enhance strigolactone biosynthesis and regulate shoot and root architecture in rice

Kun Yuan et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for plant development and metabolism. NSP1 and NSP2 regulate rice tiller number and root architecture, and promote the biosynthesis of strigolactones (SLs), a class of phytohormones. They also repress the expression of CRL1 to restrain lateral root density under low-phosphorus conditions. In addition, GR244DO treatment enhances phosphorus absorption and maintains the balance between nitrogen and phosphorus uptake in rice. The overexpression of NSP1 and NSP2 improves agronomic traits and grain yield under low-phosphorus conditions.

Mechanistic insights into the regulation of plant phosphate homeostasis by the rice SPX2-PHR2 complex

Zeyuan Guan et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors investigate the regulation of PHR2 by SPX2 based on crystal structure analysis. They propose that SPX2 prevents the DNA binding and oligomerisation of PHR2 to inactivate it. These findings provide insights into how PP-InsPs activate SPX receptor proteins to target PHR family transcription factors.

Identification of SPX family genes in the maize genome and their expression under different phosphate regimes

Jibin Xiao et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that SPX family genes are crucial in phosphorus deficiency signal transduction in plants. In maize, the SPX gene family members are significantly induced under P-deficient conditions, with certain subfamily members showing strong responses to low P stress.

Mechanism of phosphate sensing and signaling revealed by rice SPX1-PHR2 complex structure

Jia Zhou et al.

Summary: SPX1 protein binds to InsP(6) to inhibit the activity of PHR2 by disrupting PHR2 dimers and forming a SPX1-PHR2 complex, thereby maintaining phosphate homeostasis. This dual mechanism attenuates dimerization and DNA binding activities of PHR2.
