Simultaneous oxidation of Mn(II) and As(III) on cupric oxide (CuO) promotes As(III) removal at circumneutral pH

Lingqun Zeng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the oxidation of Mn(II) and As(III) on oxide mineral surfaces and their simultaneous removal. CuO and alpha-Fe2O3 exhibited higher catalytic activity for Mn(II) oxidation. Mn(II) acted as an electron shuttle to promote As(III) oxidation and removal on CuO. CuO was suggested as an efficient material for remediating Mn(II) and As(III) contamination.

Impacts of ammonium ion on triclinic birnessites towards the transformation of As(III)

Lu Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of ammonium ion (NH4+) on triclinic birnessite (TB) in the transformation of arsenite (As(III)). The presence of NH4+ significantly enhances the removal efficiency and oxidation rate of As(III) by TB. The improved oxidation state of Mn and the increase of oxygen vacancy due to the coexistence of NH4+ contribute to the advanced As(III) oxidation capacity of TB. The larger specific surface area of TB also enhances the oxidation capacity of As(III). This study provides a fundamental understanding of the behavior of TB with ammonium ion towards the transformation of As(III) in the environment.

Alteration of birnessite reactivity in dynamic anoxic/oxic environments

Qinzhiy Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the sensitivity of the reactivity of layered manganese oxide to dynamic anoxic/oxic conditions. Under oxic conditions, the surface-catalyzed oxidation of Mn(II) increased the removal efficiency of the target contaminant OFL. However, an increase in Mn(II)/MnO2 molar ratio suppressed MnO2 reactivity, likely due to competitive binding between Mn (II) and OFL or modification in MnO2 surface charge. Monovalent cations compensation and their effect on MnO2 particle aggregation were observed under oxic conditions. The enhancement in the removal efficiency of OFL was confirmed in the dynamic two-step anoxic/oxic process, which emulates oscillating redox conditions in environmental settings.

Effects of low molecular weight organic acids with different functional groups on arsenate adsorption on birnessite

Mengyu Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) on the adsorption of arsenic (As) onto birnessite in constructed wetlands. The results show that LMWOAs promote As adsorption through the formation of a birnessite-carboxyl-As ternary complex. The presence of hydroxyl groups enhances the coordination between carboxyl groups, As(V) and birnessite. However, high concentrations of LMWOAs lead to a decrease in As(V) concentrations and an increase in Mn(II) concentrations, indicating a reductive dissolution of birnessite that promotes As adsorption followed by As mobilization.

Controlling microbial arsenite oxidation and mobilization in arsenite-adsorbed iron minerals: The Influence of pH conditions and mineralogical composition

Xiaolin Cai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the controlling mechanisms of microbial As(III) oxidation in As(III)-adsorbed Fe minerals through incubation with As(III)-oxidizing bacteria at different pH conditions. The results show that the percentage of As(III) oxidized to As(V) significantly increases under neutral and alkaline conditions. The As(III) adsorption complexes formed on hematite are more stable than those on magnetite, limiting the activity and mobility of strain HN-1.

Purifying effect of biochar-zeolite constructed wetlands on arsenic-containing biogas slurry in large-scale pig farms

Xiongfei Guo et al.

Summary: The study found that the removal rate of NH4+-N in biogas slurry was consistently higher in the CWs under different dilution ratios, while the removal rates of TP, COD, and As showed an initial increase followed by a decrease with higher dilution ratios. The addition of zeolite and biochar enhanced the decontamination effect of CWs, with zeolite showing better removal of NH4+-N, TP, and COD, and biochar showing better removal of As. The enrichment and absorption of As by sediments, water spinach, and purple Pennisetum sinese were increased by adding biochar and zeolite, with zeolite having a more significant effect than biochar.
