Comparison of different numerical modelling approaches for the assessment of the out-of-plane behaviour of two-leaf stone masonry walls

Antonio Murano et al.

Summary: This study compares the ability of different numerical modelling approaches to simulate the out-of-plane behaviour of two-leaf stone masonry walls with different masonry bond configurations. Finite element modelling, considering both a micro and macro-modelling approach, and the distinct element method have been compared, aiming to provide an insight regarding parameter estimation and the calibration procedure for each modelling approach considered, highlight their pros and cons of the selected modelling strategies, and further expand the existing literature addressing the numerical modelling of two-leaf stone masonry walls.

Investigation of compression constitutive relationship of ancient brick masonry

Qian Xia et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the main mechanical properties of ancient masonry materials and the stress-strain relationship of ancient brick masonry under uniaxial compression. Based on the experimental data, a constitutive relationship and formulas for elastic modulus of ancient brick masonry were established. The findings provide a theoretical basis for finite element simulation and durability evaluation of ancient masonry structures.

Stability of steel columns with bolted strengthening under preload: Experimental study

Sizhe Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of preload on the stability of strengthened steel columns. Experimental results show that preload influences the behaviors of columns, including deformations, strains, and stresses, as well as the ultimate load capacity. The effect of preload on ultimate load capacity is generally insignificant, but it can be either favorable or unfavorable depending on the case. The combined effects of equivalent initial deformation and initial stresses contribute to the varying effect of preload.

Performance evaluation of axial-loaded circular steel tubes strengthened by welding under service load

Xianzhong Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the strengthening of axial-loaded circular steel tubes by welding method. The results show that intermittent welding and hybrid welding can effectively reduce welding-induced deformation, and welding can lead to increased deformation under high service load, thereby decreasing the ultimate resistance of the members.

To experimental study of performance evaluation of masonry brick bond in shear and compression in comparison

Nadeem Abbas et al.

Summary: Pakistan is facing a shortage of approximately 9 million residential constructions, leading to a need for cost-effective and energy-efficient masonry construction. Rat-trap masonry bond has been identified as a greener and more sustainable alternative to conventional brick bonds, as it provides thermal insulation and cost savings. Comparative studies have shown that rat-trap bond exhibits higher compressive and shear strengths compared to the English bond.

Evaluation of masonry walls subjected to blast loading based on material modelling approach

Sardasht S. Weli et al.

Summary: Historical buildings subjected to extreme loading, such as earthquakes or external blasts, have become a focus for researchers due to the increase in accidental and intentional explosion events worldwide. This paper discusses different material models and concludes that detailed micro modeling is chosen for numerical simulation of masonry walls, as it lacks the ability to model different failure patterns. The influence of boundary conditions on blast behavior and the comparison of numerical and experimental results are also investigated.

Experimental investigation on compressive performance of masonry columns confined with textile-reinforced concrete

Lei Jing et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the effectiveness of textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) in strengthening masonry structures, proposing prediction formulas for compressive strength and ultimate strain. TRC-confined masonry columns showed improved ductile behavior and carrying capacity, with carbon-glass TRC showing more prominent effects than basalt-glass TRC.

Performance of masonry columns confined with composites under axial compression: A state-of-the-art review

Julian Thamboo

Summary: The confinement technique is used to enhance the strength and ductility of structural elements, with three different techniques suitable for masonry columns. While each technique has its own advantages and disadvantages, analytical models from Italian guidelines were found to conservatively predict the confined strength of masonry columns.

Study on axial compressive performance of HDC-masonry composite elements

Tong Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the axial compressive performance of HDC-masonry composite columns/walls through testing masonry specimens, with results showing that the composite effect of HDC improved load-carrying capacity and peak axial displacement of masonry columns/walls. However, full-scale masonry columns exhibited smaller increases in performance compared to short column and wall specimens, due to their high slenderness ratio.

Experimental research on the shear behavior of brick walls reinforced with dry-connected steel plate frames

Yonghui Hou et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive study on the shear behavior of dry-connected steel plate frame-reinforced brick walls through experimental tests and theoretical analyses. Experimental tests showed that steel plate frames effectively improved the bearing capacity and stiffness of masonry structures and impeded cracking. Increasing steel plate thickness and vertical load boosted the peak load and axial stiffness of steel frame-reinforced structures but reduced ductility. The proposed formulas for determining the bearing capacity of composite walls showed high accuracy in comparison with experimental results, based on buckling theory of steel plates and existing calculation theory of masonry.

Deng-Hu Jing et al.

Summary: This study investigates the working mechanism of pre-stressed steel strips for strengthening brick masonry walls under axial loads. The results show that pre-compression on vertical strips increases crack initiation and distribution loads, while pretension on horizontal strips increases the axial load bearing capacity of the walls.
