Establishing Pediatric Reference Ranges for Rotational Thromboelastometry

Erin Kathleen Goodhue Meyer et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to establish normal pediatric reference intervals (PRIs) for rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) Delta assays in a representative group of healthy children aged 0 to 18 years. A total of 20 patients from 5 different age groups were included, and two sets of PRIs were defined based on age. The PRIs were embedded in the electronic medical record for easy interpretation of ROTEM results.

THE ROLE OF EVIDENCE-BASED ALGORITHMS FOR ROTATIONAL THROMBOELASTOMETRY- GUIDED BLEEDING MANAGEMENT

Summary: ROTEM is a point-of-care viscoelastic method that assesses viscoelastic profiles of whole blood. ROTEM-guided bleeding management is crucial for improving patient safety and is an important part of patient blood management.

Prolonged prothrombin time does not correlate with clinical bleeding symptoms in newly diagnosed paediatric leukaemia patients

Maha Al-Ghafry et al.

Summary: Prolonged prothrombin time (PT) and/or activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) are commonly seen in newly diagnosed paediatric leukaemia patients (NDPLP), but may not require blood product replacement in the absence of significant bleeding. A study reviewed data from 93 NDPLP between 2015 and 2018, and found that bleeding symptoms were correlated with thrombocytopenia, but not with prolongation of PT or aPTT.

Application of Rotational Thromboelastometry in Patients with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia

Nikica Sabljic et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prognostic potential of rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) for bleeding in patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). The results suggest that ROTEM parameters may improve current hemorrhage prognostic methods and are associated with hemorrhagic early death (HED).

Challenges and Advances in Managing Thrombocytopenic Cancer Patients

Avi Leader et al.

Summary: Cancer patients with thrombocytopenia require platelet transfusions for management, but there are still unmet needs such as high residual bleeding rates and dose reductions in anti-cancer treatment. Studies on non-transfusion-based approaches and antithrombotic therapy in thrombocytopenic cancer patients are important for addressing these challenges.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) and the prothrombotic state: Coagulation profiles and rotational thromboelastometry in a MIS-C cohort

Maha Al-Ghafry et al.

Summary: Adults infected with SARS-CoV-2 have high rates of thrombosis, while children with MIS-C have a prothrombotic state. Analysis of coagulation profiles and ROTEM parameters can help in risk stratification for thromboprophylaxis. D-dimer levels and FIBTEM MCF are predictive of clinical outcomes in MIS-C patients.
