Air dispersal of respiratory viruses other than severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the implication on hospital infection control

Shuk-Ching Wong et al.

Summary: This study found that the air dispersal of respiratory viruses may have important implications for infection prevention and public health. The viral load of patients is closely associated with the air dispersal of viruses in isolation rooms. Patients placed in double-bed isolation rooms had a higher viral load in the air compared to singly isolated patients.

CFD analysis of the air supply rate influence on the aerosol dispersion in a university lecture room

Fausto Arpino et al.

Summary: The study investigates the distribution of airborne droplets (aerosol) emitted in a lecture room during a 2-hour speaking activity, as a function of different air supply rates from the HVAC system. The results show that increasing the air supply rate does not always effectively reduce aerosol concentration around the classroom seats.

Transmission of droplet aerosols in an elevator cabin: Effect of the ventilation mode

Xian Li et al.

Summary: The recent COVID-19 outbreak poses a threat to public health. Due to the sealed and poorly ventilated environment, elevator cabins expose passengers to respiratory tract infections. This study examined the distribution and dispersion of droplet aerosols in elevator cabins and evaluated the transmission under three ventilation modes. Computational fluid dynamics simulations were used to analyze droplet aerosols produced by nose breathing and mouth coughing. The results showed that the air curtain ventilation mode significantly reduced the inhalation proportion of droplet aerosols compared to mixed and displacement ventilation modes, indicating its effectiveness in reducing exposure risk.

Why do ventilation strategies matter in controlling infectious airborne particles? A comprehensive numerical analysis in isolation ward

Huiyi Tan et al.

Summary: A proper ventilation strategy in an isolation ward can improve indoor air quality and reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections (HAI) and airborne diseases. This study proposes and examines ventilation strategies to reduce particle settlement in patients. The combination of a ceiling-mounted air diffuser and air curtain jet proves effective in preventing particle settlement on patients and reducing particles in the vicinity of medical staff.

The airflow distribution and aerosol diffusion rules in the negative pressure isolation ward

Shanbi Peng et al.

Summary: Negative pressure wards are important for preventing the spread of infectious pathogens. Effective ventilation systems play a crucial role in reducing the risk of infection by controlling the airflow and motion of pathogens. This study analyzed the impact of airflow patterns and human postures on aerosol diffusion using computational fluid dynamics simulation. The results showed that the highest contaminant removal efficiency was achieved with the top supply and bottom return mode, and the standing posture had the highest efficiency. The study recommended a specific airflow scheme for negative pressure isolation wards to ensure a safe environment for medical staff and patients.

Poor ventilation worsens short-range airborne transmission of respiratory infection

Summary: The study demonstrates that SARS-CoV-2 transmission is more common indoors than outdoors, and the ventilation rate significantly impacts airborne transmission. A ventilation rate of 10 L/s per person provides a similar concentration vs distance decay profile to outdoor settings.

Evaluation of SARS-COV-2 transmission and infection in airliner cabins

Wensi Wang et al.

Summary: Commercial airliners have played a significant role in the global spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Using computational fluid dynamics, this study simulated the transmission of the virus on two flights. The results suggest that wearing masks and reducing conversation frequency can help mitigate the risk of exposure to the virus.

Visualization of the infection risk assessment of SARS-CoV-2 through aerosol and surface transmission in a negative-pressure ward

Weiqi Guo et al.

Summary: Since December 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has posed a great challenge to global public health. Nosocomial infections have been common in medical institutions worldwide. Therefore, it is urgent to establish an effective surveillance and early warning system to prevent nosocomial infections in negative-pressure wards. This study conducted a risk assessment of SARS-CoV-2 infection through aerosol and surface transmission in a negative-pressure ward, providing insights into its distribution regularity, critical factors of infection, and factors affecting infection risk. The results can serve as a theoretical reference and technical support for reducing the occurrence of nosocomial infections.

Risk of SARS-CoV-2 in a car cabin assessed through 3D CFD simulations

Fausto Arpino et al.

Summary: This study estimated the risk of infection from the SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant for passengers sharing a car cabin with an infected subject for a 30-minute journey. Different factors were investigated, and the results showed that the risk of infection is influenced by key parameters and can be controlled by designing the flow patterns of the indoor environment.

Summary: The study utilized CFD simulations to analyze the role of HVAC systems in infection transmission, demonstrating that HVAC systems accelerate the spread of infected droplets in indoor environments. Proper use of Local Exhaust Ventilation systems (LEV) in hospital rooms significantly reduces the spread of droplets from the patient's mouth, decreasing the risk of contagion.

Summary: This study measured aerosols from singing, speaking, and breathing in a cohort of 25 professional singers, finding that singing produces aerosols at a factor of 1.5 to 3.4 more than speaking. Guidelines for musical performances should focus on factors such as loudness, duration, number of participants, and environment, rather than vocalization type.

Breathing, speaking, coughing or sneezing: What drives transmission of SARS-CoV-2?

V Stadnytskyi et al.

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 virus is highly contagious, with speech droplets playing a significant role in its airborne transmission. Carriers with mild or no symptoms can have high viral loads, especially in the oral cavity epithelium. While larger droplets may carry more virions, smaller speech aerosols can travel deeper into the lower respiratory tract and pose a greater risk of transmission in poorly ventilated indoor environments.

Airborne transmission of respiratory viruses

Chia C. Wang et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed critical knowledge gaps in our understanding of traditional respiratory virus transmission pathways, highlighting the need for updates. Improved understanding of aerosol transmission through studies of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection calls for a reassessment of major transmission pathways for other respiratory viruses, enabling better control measures to reduce airborne transmission.
