Recent advances and perspectives on graphene-based gels for superior flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors

Yong Zhang et al.

Summary: Flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors (FASSS) are a new generation of energy storage devices that have received extensive attention due to their high power density, flexibility, light weight, small size, safety, and long cycle life. The electrode and electrolyte materials of FASSS greatly influence its electrochemical properties, making them subjects of wide study and research. Graphene-based gel with 3D network structure, combining the physicochemical properties of graphene and gel's structural properties, is a novel material used in FASSS to improve its electrochemical performance and functional properties. This paper presents the preparation strategies and structural regulation methods of graphene-based gels, and summarizes their application in FASSS electrode and electrolyte materials. The effect mechanisms of functionalized graphene-based gels on electrochemical properties, mechanical properties, and various functional properties are discussed, and the prospects and challenges of graphene-based gels in FASSS are analyzed.

Carbon Materials as a Conductive Skeleton for Supercapacitor Electrode Applications: A Review

Yedluri Anil Kumar et al.

Summary: Supercapacitors have gained popularity as energy-storage devices and their performance relies on the choice of electrode materials. Carbon-based electrodes are favored due to their low cost, abundance, and ability to easily modify their conductivity and surface area. Numerous studies have explored different carbon compounds, including pure carbon nanotubes and multi-stage carbon nanostructures, as electrodes to enhance the performance of carbon-based supercapacitors. These studies have investigated various pure carbon nanostructures and examined the use of different carbon nanomaterials, such as AC, CNTs, GR, CNCs, among others, to improve capacitance. This study provides a roadmap for producing high-quality supercapacitors using carbon-based electrodes.

Preparation and electrochemical properties of cobalt aluminum layered double hydroxide/carbon-based integrated composite electrode materials for supercapacitors

Yong Zhang et al.

Summary: By using a one-step hydrothermal method, researchers have constructed a special structure of CoAl-LDH/carbon-based composite integrated electrode materials, improving their electrochemical properties. Among them, CoAl-LDH/activated carbon composites exhibit the best capacitance performance. Adding a small amount of ethanol to the solvent can enhance the specific capacitance and cycling stability of CoAl-LDH/activated carbon composites at high current density.

Enhancing asymmetric supercapacitor performance with NiCo2O4-NiO hybrid electrode fabrication

Tholkappiyan Ramachandran et al.

Summary: Spinel metal oxide with an extra crystalline phase has been synthesized and studied for its potential application in supercapacitors. The material, nanocrystalline NiCo2O4 with an extra NiO phase, exhibited a remarkable electrochemical performance, with high capacitance and good capacity retention over 5000 cycles. The presence of the NiO phase induced additional charge at the boundary, leading to synergistic effects and improved electron and ion passage. This finding suggests that spinel metal oxide electrodes with an extra phase could be beneficial for battery-type supercapacitor applications.

Acid substitutions for WO3 nanostructures synthesis by the hydrothermal route and its effect on physio-chemical and electrochemical properties for supercapacitors

Umesh V. Shembade et al.

Summary: In this study, a feasible and eco-friendly electrode material for supercapacitor application was developed by synthesizing different morphological structures of tungsten oxide nanostructures (WO3NSs). The electrochemical activity of WO3-NSs was evaluated by employing concentrated acids in the synthesis process. The WO3-NSs exhibited different morphologies such as hexagonal-shaped nanosheets, one-dimensional nanorods, and heterogeneous non-uniform agglomerated nanosheets as observed by FE-SEM. The optimized WO3NRs were further characterized using TEM and XPS for detailed morphological, structural, elemental composition, and electronic states analysis. The electrochemical properties of the WO3-NSs were examined in 1 M KOH electrolyte, and the M-WO3-NF electrode showed high specific capacity, gravimetric capacitance, energy density, power density, and Columbic efficiency, as well as excellent capacitive retention over 5000 cycles.
