Finite element model updating and damage identification using semi-rigidly connected frame element and optimization procedure: An experimental validation

Parsa Ghannadi et al.

Summary: Due to the increasing complexity of engineering structures, it is crucial to develop a methodology for early defect detection that ensures long-term safety and reliability at minimal cost. This study proposes the use of a semi-rigidly connected frame element (S-RCFE) to assemble the finite element (FE) model and establish a high-fidelity numerical model. Optimization-based procedures are employed to achieve reasonable agreement between experimental and numerical models. The results show that the improved version of grey wolf optimizer (IGWO) provides the most reliable results for damage identification but requires extensive computation time.

Finite element model updating of a multispan bridge with a hybrid metaheuristic search algorithm using experimental data from wireless triaxial sensors

H. Tran-Ngoc et al.

Summary: The paper proposes a novel approach to model updating for the Guadalquivir bridge based on vibration measurements and a hybrid metaheuristic search algorithm. By utilizing the advantages of genetic algorithm and improved cuckoo search, the proposed hybrid algorithm effectively addresses the shortcomings of cuckoo search and improves the accuracy and efficiency of optimization problems.

Crack propagation in quasi-brittle materials by fourth-order phase-field cohesive zone model

Khuong D. Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fourth-order phase-field model combined with the non-standard phase-field form and cohesive zone model for predicting crack propagation in quasi-brittle material. The Virtual Uncommon-Knot Inserted Master-Slave technique is employed for local refinement mesh. Results show that this method has significant advantages in terms of computational cost and solution accuracy compared to the standard phase-field approach.
