Farmers' precision pesticide technology adoption and its influencing factors: Evidence from apple production areas in China

Summary: The research explores farmers' willingness to adopt (WTA) and willingness to pay (WTP) for precision pesticide technologies and examines factors influencing their decision-making. A survey of 545 apple farmers in Bohai Bay and the Loess Plateau in China was conducted using a double-hurdle model. The findings reveal that a significant majority of respondents showed WTA for precision pesticide technologies provided by service organizations and had WTP to purchase the corresponding equipment. Factors such as perceived perceptions, farm scale, cooperative membership, access to digital information, and availability of financial services were identified to positively impact farmers' WTA, while membership in cooperatives, technical training, and compliance with environmental regulations influenced farmers' WTP. Nonlinear relationships were also discovered between age, agricultural experience, and farmers' WTA and WTP for precision pesticide technology services.

Internet searching and investment sensitivity to stock price: Evidence from a quasi-natural experiment

Summary: By utilizing Google's sudden withdrawal from mainland China as a quasi-natural experiment, this study examines the causal effect of internet searching on investment-to-price sensitivity. The results indicate that Google's withdrawal significantly decreases investment-to-price sensitivity. This effect is more pronounced when outside investors are more incentivized to acquire private information and when managers rely more on external information. The findings provide evidence that internet searching, by influencing investors' information acquisition, plays a role in managers' ability to learn from prices when making investment decisions.

The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) can explain adoption behavior, and Social Information Networks (SIN) also play a role in predicting adoption intentions. The study emphasizes the need to enhance the technical capacity of extension staff and informal networks in sharing DRR information with farmers.

Do social interactions foster household entrepreneurship? Evidence from online and offline data from China Family Panel Studies

Summary: Using China Family Panel Studies data, we find that online and offline social interactions have a positive impact on household entrepreneurial choice, intensity, and performance. Our findings are robust considering the potential endogeneity problem. The mechanisms of information acquisition, relaxing financing constraints, and relative wealth concern are valid. Heterogeneity analysis shows that online social interaction has a more significant impact on entrepreneurs of rural migrant backgrounds and households in the eastern regions. Additionally, the promotion effect of social interactions is more pronounced for households with higher debt levels.

How social interaction shapes habitual and occasional low-carbon consumption behaviors: Evidence from ten cities in China

Summary: This study distinguishes between habitual low-carbon consumption behavior (HLCB) and occasional low-carbon consumption behavior (OLCB) and investigates the effects of social interaction, attitudinal uncertainty, and knowledge distance on both behavior categories. The findings reveal a positive linear relationship between social interaction and HLCB, but an inverted U-shaped association between social interaction and OLCB. Attitudinal uncertainty positively moderates the association between social interaction and HLCB, and reinforces the inverted U-shaped association between social interaction and OLCB. Knowledge distance exacerbates the association between social interaction and OLCB, but no moderating effect is found between social interaction and HLCB. This study contributes to the understanding of the multifaceted effects of social interaction and provides insights into targeted policy schemes for different types of low-carbon consumption behaviors.

Sharing energy poverty: The nexus between social interaction-oriented gift expenditure and energy poverty in rural China

Summary: This study examines the impact of social interaction-oriented gift expenditure on the energy poverty of rural households in China. The findings indicate that such gift expenditure can crowd out energy expenditures and increase the likelihood of energy inaccessibility, unaffordability, and multidimensional energy poverty. Additionally, household deposits play a mediating role in the positive relationship between gift expenditure and rural energy poverty. Regulating monetary gift-giving behavior could help alleviate rural energy poverty.

Does Internet use promote the adoption of agricultural technology? Evidence from 1 449 farm households in 14 Chinese provinces

Summary: This study surveyed 1,449 smallholder farmers across 14 provinces in China and found that Internet use can significantly promote the adoption of modern agricultural production technology by smallholders, with a greater effect on those with low education levels, limited training, and high incomes. To increase the adoption of agricultural production technology by smallholders, the Chinese government should prioritize rural Internet infrastructure and the promotion of Internet use.

Information transfer as a tool to improve the resilience of farmers against the effects of climate change: The case of the Peruvian National Agrarian Innovation System

Summary: The study aims to understand the structure of interactions between farmers and institutions in the National Agrarian Innovation System of Peru regarding the transfer of information on preventing the effects of extreme weather events. The results show that only 13% of smallholders and 18% of large-scale farmers in Peru are receiving this information, mainly through TV and radio (non-specialized media) and mostly from one governmental institution. There are also groups of farmers who rely on other institutions, with regional differences in access to information. The study suggests that there is room for improvement in the transfer of information on preventing extreme weather events.

Social interaction and geographic diffusion of iron-biofortified beans in Rwanda

Summary: The adoption of AGPT by farmers is a hot topic in various countries and academia. This study explores the impact of farmers' environmental regulation perception and social capital on their AGPT adoption behavior using survey data from kiwifruit growers in China. The results show that the adoption rate of AGPT is high, but the level of adoption is low. Both environmental regulation perception and social capital have a significant influence on AGPT adoption, with an interactive effect. Additionally, there are intergenerational differences in AGPT adoption behavior, with different factors influencing the new and old generation farmers.

The results show that ambiguity preference has a significant influence on the adoption of soil testing and formula fertilization technology, with a stronger effect on soil testing technology. Additionally, social learning has a significantly positive impact on the adoption of both technologies. The study also finds that the adoption likelihood of the technologies varies with farmers' cognitive abilities and ages, indicating that ambiguity preference and social learning can positively promote technology adoption, particularly among older farmers. Overall, this research provides micro-foundations and policy recommendations for promoting household soil testing and formula fertilization technology in rural China and offers insights on how the government can formulate relevant policies for green environmental development.

Sooner rather than later: Social networks and technology adoption

Summary: Using data from a randomised experiment in Kenya, the causal effect of social networks on technology adoption was estimated. The study found that having an additional social connection with a treated farmer increased the likelihood of an untreated farmer adopting the technology within 6-18 months after intervention, but not in the longer term. The adoption of the technology by treated connections was identified as the main driving factor of this effect. Additionally, the study observed indirect social network effects influencing adoption at both the village level and the farmer level.

Intergenerational and gender differences in satisfaction of farmers with rural public space: Insights from traditional village in Northwest China

Summary: With the rapid urbanization in China, the rural public space is undergoing significant changes. In this study, a satisfaction evaluation index system for farmers' rural public space was constructed. The findings suggest a mismatch between the supply and demand of rural public space, resulting in a relatively low overall satisfaction. There are significant generational and gender differences in satisfaction, with older individuals and women being more satisfied. Future policies should focus on modernizing village traditional culture and addressing the diverse needs of different groups. Enhancing rural social organizations and public management capacity is also important.
