Nitrogen and phosphorus availability have stronger effects on gross and net nitrogen mineralisation than wheat rhizodeposition

Bahareh Bicharanloo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilization on microbial nitrogen mineralization in soil planted with different wheat genotypes. The results showed that phosphorus fertilization increased GNM, low level N fertilization led to phosphorus-induced nitrogen limitation, high level N fertilization reduced NNM, and the impact of rhizodeposition was less significant compared to soil nitrogen and phosphorus availability between wheat genotypes.

Global patterns of soil gross immobilization of ammonium and nitrate in terrestrial ecosystems

Ahmed S. Elrys et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively analyzes the patterns and drivers of soil gross immobilization of ammonium (I-NH4) and nitrate (I-NO3) by considering gross N production rates, soil properties, and climate. The results show that soil I-NH4 and I-NO3 are influenced by soil gross N mineralization (GNM) and nitrification (GN), microbial biomass, organic carbon, total N, soil bulk density, pH, and precipitation. Terrestrial ecosystems and land uses also play a role in determining the levels of I-NH4 and I-NO3. These findings highlight the importance of anthropogenic activities and climate changes in affecting the fate of reactive N in soil.

Chronic nitrogen enrichment decreases soil gross nitrogen mineralization by acidification in topsoil but by carbon limitation in subsoil

Lei Song et al.

Summary: This study measured the gross N mineralization rate (GNMR) and related properties in an alpine meadow under chronic nitrogen (N) addition at different soil depths. The results showed that GNMR was negatively correlated with N addition rate and soil available NO3- content, and positively correlated with soil pH and carbon/nitrogen ratio (C/N). Acidification, increased N availability, and C limitation all decreased soil N mineralization, with acidification dominating in the topsoil and C limitation dominating in the subsoil. These findings improve our understanding of soil N mineralization with chronic N enrichment at different depths.

Effects of long-term no-tillage and maize straw mulching on gross nitrogen transformations in Mollisols of Northeast China

Lei Yuan et al.

Summary: Conservation tillage enhances the retention and availability of soil nitrogen by manipulating nitrogen cycling. The study found that no-tillage reduces organic nitrogen mineralization rate but increases ammonium immobilization rate, and increased maize residue input stimulates the supply of soil organic nitrogen. Additionally, no-tillage promotes the adsorption/fixation and subsequent release of ammonium, reduces nitrification, and lowers the risk of nitrogen loss.

Seasonality of gross ammonification and nitrification altered by precipitation in a semi-arid grassland of Northern China

Nannan Wang et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of precipitation changes in regulating nitrogen bioavailability in arid and semi-arid grassland ecosystems, mainly through controlling gross ammonification and gross nitrification. Increased precipitation significantly enhances gross nitrogen turnover rates, while decreased precipitation leads to suppression.

Grazing rest versus no grazing stimulates soil inorganic N turnover in the alpine grasslands of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau

Man Lang et al.

Summary: Little information is available on soil nitrogen cycling in the grasslands of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau under different grazing regimes, which is required to evaluate management practices with respect to soil nitrogen availability and dynamics. In this study, it was found that continuous grazing significantly reduced the rates of nitrogen mineralization, microbial NH4+ immobilization, autotrophic nitrification, and NO3- consumption, while increasing the ratios of autotrophic nitrification to microbial NH4+ immobilization and the rates of total NO3- production to total NO3- consumption. On the other hand, grazing rest maintained a higher soil inorganic nitrogen supply capacity than continuous grazing and stimulated NO3- turnover.

Patterns and drivers of global gross nitrogen mineralization in soils

Ahmed S. Elrys et al.

Summary: Soil gross nitrogen mineralization is mainly controlled by climate and soil properties, with factors such as microbial biomass, total carbon, total nitrogen, precipitation, bulk density, and soil pH playing key roles. Total nitrogen accelerates mineralization by increasing microbial biomass, while lower bulk density and higher precipitation also stimulate the process. The study suggests that microbial population size, soil substrate availability, soil pH, precipitation changes, and land use can interact to influence nitrogen mineralization, ultimately impacting ecosystem productivity and nitrogen loss to the environment.
