Setting thresholds for good ecosystem state in marine seabed systems and beyond

J. G. Hiddink et al.

Summary: One aim of environmental management is achieving a good ecosystem state, but assessing this state has often been subjective and haphazard. This review evaluates different approaches for setting thresholds to define a good state for marine seabed ecosystems. Only two approaches quantitatively estimate current ecologically meaningful good states, while others are subjective or based on detectable thresholds rather than distinguishing between good and degraded states. The most objective method suggests maintaining the state within the range of natural variation in undisturbed systems, with a preliminary analysis suggesting a threshold of 54-79% of the undisturbed state for marine seabed community biomass.

Ecological dynamic regimes: Identification, characterization, and comparison

Martina Sanchez-Pinillos et al.

Summary: Understanding ecological dynamics has always been a central topic in ecology, but identifying dynamic regimes remains a research frontier in modern ecology. In the context of global change, identifying and characterizing ecological dynamic regimes are crucial for evaluating ecological resilience. However, implementing dynamic regimes in empirical science is still challenging due to the high dimensionality and stochasticity of ecological data. The advent of big data and advances in quantitative ecology and data science provide an opportunity to study dynamic regimes from a new perspective. This paper presents a methodological framework to describe ecological dynamic regimes based on ecological trajectories in a multidimensional state space, and provides analytical tools to identify, characterize, and compare these regimes. The framework fills the gap between theoretical and empirical ecology by offering robust analytical tools to assess ecological resilience and study ecosystem dynamics.

Stable Isotope Trajectory Analysis (SITA): A new approach to quantify and visualize dynamics in stable isotope studies

Anthony Sturbois et al.

Summary: Ecologists working with stable isotopes face challenges in analyzing and representing complex datasets with temporal and spatial replication. A lack of commonly accepted conceptual framework in stable isotope ecology has hindered quantitative detection of functional patterns. The community trajectory analysis (CTA) framework provides more explicit perspectives for ecological trajectories. Building on CTA, the Stable Isotope Trajectory Analysis (SITA) framework allows quantitative analysis of stable isotope spatial and temporal dynamics and offers new graphical representation solutions.

Summary: This study analyzed the historical changes and ecological regime shifts in the Baltic Sea ecosystem. Assessing vegetation recovery from energy development using a dynamic reference approach

Adrian P. Monroe et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the use of a dynamic reference approach to studying sagebrush recovery. Results showed that sagebrush recovery on former well pads increased more when paired reference sites had greater sagebrush cover. Higher quantiles of sagebrush cover were projected to recover quickly, while lower quantiles were projected to have minimal recovery within 100 years. The findings highlight the importance of using dynamic reference sites and quantile regression for vegetation recovery studies.

A Bayesian approach for assessing the boundary between desirable and undesirable environmental status - An example from a coastal fish indicator in the Baltic Sea

Mirka Laurila-Pant et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel probabilistic approach that combines historical monitoring data and ecological understanding to estimate the uncertainty associated with the boundary value of an ecological indicator between good and poor environmental states. By replacing the traditional boundary value with a probability distribution, it provides a transparent safety margin associated with the risk of misclassification.

Extending community trajectory analysis: New metrics and representation

A. Sturbois et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a new framework for analyzing community dynamics and expands it by incorporating additional metrics related to initial states. It proposes using innovative maps, charts, and trajectory roses to represent ecological trajectories and enhance their interpretation. The authors urge ecologists skilled in multivariate analysis to integrate this Community Trajectory Analysis into their toolbox to quantitatively evaluate spatio-temporal changes.

Evaluating Impact Using Time-Series Data

Hannah S. Wauchope et al.

Summary: Human impact on the environment is growing, with increasing strategies to conserve biodiversity. However, there is still a lack of understanding on how interventions affect ecological and conservation outcomes, especially in the analysis of time series data. A standardized framework is needed to robustly assess the impacts of interventions on ecological time series.

Summary: A new general-purpose biotic index (GPBI) based on deviation from a valid reference is proposed for realistic assessments of benthic habitats. GPBI successfully detects the impact of various pressures on benthic fauna and outperforms commonly used pressure-specific indices.
