Testing the asymmetric effect of financial stability towards carbon neutrality target: The case of Iceland and global comparison

Chi-Wei Su et al.

Summary: In the last decade, Iceland's CO2 emissions have decreased, and the country has maintained financial stability. However, Iceland still has higher per-capita CO2 emissions compared to other European nations. This research examines the asymmetric effect of financial stability on CO2 emissions in Iceland using a quarterly dataset from 1995 to 2019. The findings show that positive changes in financial stability reduce CO2 emissions, while negative changes have no impact. Additionally, positive changes in energy use and income increase CO2 emissions, while negative changes in energy use and income have mitigating effects. Negative changes in trade openness increase CO2 emissions, while positive changes have mitigating effects.

Dynamic and threshold effects of energy transition and environmental governance on green growth in COP26 framework

Asif Razzaq et al.

Summary: This research examines the influence of energy transition and environmental governance on green growth in 37 IEA economies from 2010 to 2020. The study finds that when the energy transition index (ETI) is below the threshold of 0.485, it leads to lower green growth, but becomes significantly positive when it exceeds the threshold value. Environmental regulation also has a significant positive impact on green growth, especially when the regulation score is higher than 0.604. Therefore, inclusive and long-term policies for energy transition and governance are crucial for achieving the green growth agenda.

Transition towards sustainable energy: The role of economic complexity, financial liberalization and natural resources management in China

Xiaoyi Wang et al.

Summary: China's sustainable development relies heavily on transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy, and this research aims to investigate the impact of financial globalization, economic complexity, and natural resources on China's renewable energy usage. The empirical results show that economic complexity, natural resources, and economic growth positively influence renewable energy while financial globalization has a negative impact in the short run. Causal interaction tests confirm the relationship between renewable energy and its determinants at different time horizons, emphasizing the need for policymakers to prioritize diversified and specialized exports.

Natural resources, energy efficiency transition and sustainable development: Evidence from BRICS economies

Zhongbao Wang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively analyzes the impact of natural resource dependence on sustainable development in BRICS economies. The results show that forest rents, coal rents, and energy efficiency have adverse effects on sustainability, while oil rents are significant for sustainability. Mineral rents are found to be insignificant in association with development. Additionally, total natural resources are negatively associated with growth, validating the resource curse hypothesis. Furthermore, the negative influence of energy efficiency transforms into a positive one in the presence of total natural resource rents, reflecting the importance of natural resources for sustainability in the region.
