Species delimitation of the liquorice tribe (Leguminosae: Glycyrrhizeae) based on phylogenomic and machine learning analyses

Lei Duan et al.

Summary: This study used an expanded taxon sampling and genome skimming data to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationships of the liquorice tribe Glycyrrhizeae. Machine learning analysis was also performed for a species pair with disputed taxonomic boundaries. The results suggest splitting Glycyrrhizopsis from Glycyrrhiza and treating the genus Meristotropis as part of Glycyrrhiza. Additionally, it was found that the presence of glycyrrhizin evolved twice within Glycyrrhiza in the last one million years. This integrative phylogenomics-MLA study not only resolves taxonomic controversies but also provides a useful approach for future taxonomic studies.

UV-B promotes flavonoid biosynthesis in Ginkgo biloba by inducing the GbHY5-GbMYB1-GbFLS module

Sian Liu et al.

Summary: Ginkgo biloba leaves have a higher level of flavonoids at high altitudes, and UV-B radiation plays a key role in this increase. The transcription factor GbHY5 promotes flavonoid accumulation by interacting with GbMYB1 protein. This study provides insights into the molecular mechanisms of UV-B-induced flavonoid biosynthesis and the enhancement of flavonoid content in ginkgo leaves.

Plant flavonoids: Classification, distribution, biosynthesis, and antioxidant activity

Nan Shen et al.

Summary: Flavonoids are natural polyphenol substances abundant in various plant-based foods. They have significant biological activities in both plants and humans, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects. However, research on their distribution, biosynthesis, and health benefits remains limited. Future opportunities in flavonoid research include biotechnology, therapeutic phytoproducts, and exploring dietary flavonoid bioavailability.

Transcriptome sequencing and metabolomics analyses provide insights into the flavonoid biosynthesis in Torreya grandis kernels

Feicui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the flavonoids in Torreya grandis kernels using transcriptome sequencing and metabolomics analysis. A total of 124 flavonoids were identified, and 9 of them were highly correlated with antioxidant activity. Transient overexpression of TgDFR1 resulted in increased antioxidant activity. Additionally, several transcription factors were identified as potential regulators of flavonoid biosynthesis.

Molecular components associated with the regulation of flavonoid biosynthesis

Jogindra Naik et al.

Summary: Flavonoids are structurally diverse compounds that play important roles in plants and have health benefits for humans. Various factors such as light, temperature, nutrients, and hormones modulate their biosynthesis. Transcriptional regulators, especially MYB and bHLH family transcription factors, directly regulate the genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis. Recent studies have also found that stress and hormone signaling pathways regulate some of these factors.

Prophylactic treatment of Glycyrrhiza glabra mitigates COVID-19 pathology through inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the hamster model and NETosis

Zaigham Abbas Rizvi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the efficacy of Glycyrrhiza glabra (GG) extract as an immunomodulator against SARS-CoV-2 infection in hamsters. The results show that GG provides protection against weight loss and lung viral load decrease, along with reduced lung pathology in the hamster model. GG acts as an immunomodulator by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokine expression and regulating immune cell activity. This study provides evidence for the protective efficacy of GG against COVID-19 and its potential mechanisms through immunomodulation.
