Integrating hydrogen in single-price electricity systems: The effects of spatial economic signals

Frederik vom Scheidt et al.

Summary: Hydrogen has the potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions in industry and transportation, but its production through electrolysis creates interdependencies with electricity systems. A study on Germany in 2030 shows that hydrogen infrastructure investments are influenced by electricity prices, and differentiating economic signals for hydrogen production based on spatial criteria can lead to cost savings.

Impact of seawater desalination and wastewater treatment on water stress levels and greenhouse gas emissions: The case of Chile

Sebastian Herrera-Leon et al.

Summary: Many regions are facing water stress and desalinated water and recycled water are considered as alternatives to meet the water demand. However, high energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions are major environmental impacts. This research incorporates the assessment of greenhouse gas emissions in the operation of desalination and wastewater treatment plants to evaluate water stress levels. The results reveal that Chilean arid climate zones will not experience water stress in the future due to the installation of desalination plants, and recycled water will contribute to a slight reduction in water stress. Furthermore, the contribution of these industrial systems to greenhouse gas emissions in Chile is relatively low.

Economic and environmental analysis of hydrogen production when complementing renewable energy generation with grid electricity

Byron Hurtubia et al.

Summary: Hydrogen plays a critical role in reducing carbon emissions globally, but economic competitiveness and availability of renewable energy sources are current challenges in electrolysis production. The study shows a trade-off between minimizing the levelized cost of hydrogen and minimizing CO2 emissions, with the potential to increase hydrogen production by 25.7% using just 10% grid electricity in an alkaline electrolyzer.

Electricity market design for low-carbon and flexible systems: Room for improvement in Chile

Francisco D. Munoz et al.

Summary: Chile was the first country to privatize all generation, transmission, and distribution services and introduce competition in the generation segment. However, the electricity market design has limitations such as a cost-based mechanism for spot transactions, low temporal granularity of spot prices, and missing forward markets.

The impact of renewable energy and sector coupling on the pathway towards a sustainable energy system in Chile

Juan Carlos Osorio-Aravena et al.

Summary: The research aims to analyze the impact of renewable energy technologies and sector coupling on the transition towards a sustainable energy system in Chile. It found that transitioning to a 100% renewable-based energy system by 2050 is technically feasible, cost-efficient, and Chile has the potential to reach carbon neutrality by 2030.

Long term storage in generation expansion planning models with a reduced temporal scope

Sebastian Gonzato et al.

Summary: The study compared time series aggregation methods and generation expansion planning models, finding that the selection of hours or days has a greater impact on performance than the aggregation method itself. Some generation expansion planning models were able to capture the value of long-term storage, but there was also potential for over or underinvestment.

De-politicising seawater desalination: Environmental Impact Assessments in the Atacama mining Region, Chile

Cecilia Campero et al.

Summary: This paper examines how Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Declarations of Environmental Impact (DIAs) fit into addressing the socio-environmental implications of desalination. Despite their intention to minimize negative impacts and address them before construction, they are sometimes used in ways that lead to negative socio-environmental outcomes.

Desalination in Chile's mining regions: Global drivers and local impacts of a technological fix to hydrosocial conflict

Scott D. Odell

Summary: This article examines the expansion of desalinated seawater use by the mining industry in the context of climate change. It finds that while desalination may reduce water conflict in mining regions, it may also displace socioenvironmental harms of mining to coastal areas and lead to further local and global impacts.

Guannan He et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of utilizing hydrogen as a long-duration energy storage resource in optimizing the electric grid, particularly in reducing carbon emissions and achieving cost-effectiveness, showing that the shift from power-to-H-2 (P2G) to power-to-gas-to-power (P2G2P) routes may generate greater value.

Optimal supply chains and power sector benefits of green hydrogen

Fabian Stoeckl et al.

Summary: Green hydrogen production can help reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector, but its interactions with the power sector need further study. There is a trade-off between energy efficiency and temporal flexibility in hydrogen supply chains, with different production methods optimal depending on the share of renewables and hydrogen. Large-scale hydrogen supply chains can deliver substantial power sector benefits by reducing renewable curtailment.
