Summary: Imidacloprid has toxic effects on earthworms, possibly by disrupting cell membrane integrity and triggering oxidative stress. In addition, IMI can inhibit the activity of CAT/SOD after binding with them in vitro. These findings are important for comprehensive evaluation of IMI toxicity to soil eco-safety and for elucidating the toxic mechanisms and pathways of IMI stress.

Nanoplastics induce molecular toxicity in earthworm: Integrated multi-omics, morphological, and intestinal microorganism analyses

Ronggui Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the responses of earthworms to polystyrene nanoplastics (NPs) at a relatively low concentration in contaminated soil. The results showed that NPs accumulated in the earthworms' intestinal tissues and caused damage to their digestive and immune systems. Furthermore, the NPs reduced the diversity and species richness of the gut microorganisms. The study suggests that NPs pollution poses significant environmental toxicity risks for soil fauna.

Ecotoxicological evaluation of oxidative stress-mediated neurotoxic effects, genetic toxicity, behavioral disorders, and the corresponding mechanisms induced by fluorene-contaminated soil targeted to earthworm (Eisenia fetida) brain

Falin He et al.

Summary: This study investigated the neurotoxic effects, genotoxicity, and behavior changes caused by fluorene-induced oxidative stress pathways in the earthworm brain. Excess fluorene triggered the release of excessive quantities of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the earthworm brain, leading to oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, and DNA injury. Antioxidant defense mechanisms were activated to minimize the damage effects, but further ROS-induced ROS release occurred. Exposure to fluorene also led to abnormal mRNA expression of genes relevant to oxidative stress and neurotoxicity. Additionally, avoidance responses and burrowing behavior were disturbed by oxidative stress-induced neurotoxicity. Overall, fluorene stress can potentially induce neurotoxicity, genotoxicity, and behavioral disturbances in the earthworm brain through ROS-mediated pathways involving oxidative stress.

Nanoplastics induces oxidative stress and triggers lysosome-associated immune-defensive cell death in the earthworm Eisenia fetida

Yanfei Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that nanoplastics have toxic effects on soil fauna (earthworms), including decreased antioxidant enzyme activity, accumulation of reactive oxygen species, reduced growth rate, and pathological abnormalities. These adverse effects are enhanced by positively charged nanoplastics. Moreover, the nanoplastics can enter earthworm cells and accumulate in lysosomes, leading to cellular death. These findings have important implications for assessing the ecological risk of nanoplastics.

Mechanistic insights into phenanthrene-triggered oxidative stress-associated neurotoxicity, genotoxicity, and behavioral disturbances toward the brandling worm (Eisenia fetida) brain: The need for an ecotoxicological evaluation

Falin He et al.

Summary: The study found that benzo[a]pyrene (PHE) can cause oxidative stress-related neurotoxicity, genotoxicity, and behavioral disturbances in earthworm (Eisenia fetida) brain. PHE exposure triggers the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to oxidative stress in the brain. This oxidative stress pathway results in damage to DNA and lipids, as well as inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and accumulation of excess acetylcholine (ACh), causing neurological dysfunction and neurotoxicity in E. fetida.

The emerging role of microplastics in systemic toxicity: Involvement of reactive oxygen species (ROS)

Amlan Das

Summary: Plastic pollution is a significant environmental threat that can cause detrimental effects on terrestrial and marine ecosystems as well as human health. The degradation of macroplastics into microplastics or nanoparticles can lead to organ damage and activation of intracellular signaling, resulting in cell death. Accumulating evidence supports the serious toxicity of microplastics/nanoparticles at various biological levels, and their involvement in oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species production. These particles can accumulate in mitochondria, disrupt the electron transport chain, and generate reactive free radicals that induce DNA damage, protein oxidation, lipid peroxidation, and compromise antioxidant defense. Moreover, microplastic-induced oxidative stress triggers multiple signaling cascades, leading to organ damage such as pulmonary toxicity, neurotoxicity, and hepatotoxicity. Despite ongoing research, there is a lack of proper models, interdisciplinary approaches, and mitigation strategies to fully understand and address the detrimental effects of microplastics/nanoparticles on human health.

Charge-specific adverse effects of polystyrene nanoplastics on zebrafish (Danio rerio) development and behavior

Summary: Nanoplastics, especially positively charged ones, have demonstrated neurotoxicity in fish, leading to developmental and behavioral impairments. The presence of differently charged nanoplastics in the brain and gastrointestinal tract of zebrafish was observed, with positively charged nanoplastics showing stronger toxicity and apoptosis in the brain, as well as greater neurobehavioral impairment. The specific interaction between positively charged nanoplastics and the NMDA2B neurotransmitter receptor contributes to these behavioral variations.

Toxic effects of microplastics in plants depend more by their surface functional groups than just accumulation contents

Zhimin Xu et al.

Summary: Differentially charged microplastics (MPs) generated from plastic aging can be found widely in the agricultural ecosystem. However, little is known about the toxic effects of MPs on plants and their absorption and accumulation characteristics. This study investigated the effects of MPs exposure on leaf lettuce through five different experiments, simulating root absorption in hydroponics. The results showed that MPs exposure caused growth inhibition, root lignification, root cell apoptosis, oxidative stress responses, chlorophyll decomposition, and hindered electron transfer within the PSII photosystem. Additionally, MPs exposure inhibited the uptake of essential elements by roots due to pore blockage and hetero-aggregation of opposite charges. The study also revealed that MPs could penetrate the root cortex and be transported to shoots through transpiration in xylem vessels. The toxic effects of MPs on plants were found to be determined by the types of surface functional groups rather than just their accumulation contents. Overall, this study emphasizes the importance of understanding the toxic effects and uptake mechanisms of MPs in agricultural ecosystems.
