Evolution of tunnel uplift induced by adjacent long and collinear excavation and an effective protective measure

Yanru Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, an effective anti-floating measure combining shaft excavation with the frictional pile slab (FPS) was proposed for long and collinear foundation pits above existing tunnels. The convergence of the shield segments was measured over 800 days, and numerical simulation was conducted to analyze the effect of shaft excavation width and frictional pile dimensions on tunnel uplift. A multi-objective optimization procedure was used to optimize the anti-floating design considering safety and economy. Compared to the high-pressure jet-grouting pile method, the FPS method proved more effective in controlling tunnel heave. The presented data and methods can provide useful guidance for similar scenarios.

Mathematical modelling for shield tunneling induced displacement effects on in-service tunnel: theoretical solution including shearing deformation of segment and stiffness reduction of circumferential joints

Zhiguo Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a two-stage analysis based on the Timoshenko beam model and Kerr foundation model to estimate the response of in-service tunnel. The accuracy of the method is verified with three engineering cases. Parametric analyses reveal the effects of soil elastic modulus, in-service tunnel embedment depth, diameter, and equivalent bending stiffness on tunnel displacement and internal force responses. The reduction factor has a minimal effect on tunnel displacement and segment moment but impacts local rotation around joints. (c) 2023 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Theoretical analysis on the deformation of existing tunnel caused by under-crossing of large-diameter slurry shield considering construction factors

Zhi Ding et al.

Summary: In this study, a simplified analytical method is proposed to evaluate the deformation behaviors of existing tunnels caused by large-diameter slurry shield under-crossing. The method takes into account construction factors such as additional thrust, friction force, and grouting pressure, and calculates the deformation of the existing tunnel in saturated soil. The proposed method is verified with field measurement data and a parametric analysis is conducted to study the influence of different factors. Safe values for shield crossing clearance are recommended based on the analysis. This analytical solution can serve as a reference in predicting potential risks in engineering practices.

Analytical solution for longitudinal deformation of shield tunnel induced by overcrossing tunnelling considering circumferential joints

Zhiwei Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new analytical solution for evaluating the longitudinal deformation of shield tunnel in overcrossing tunnelling, taking into consideration circumferential joints. A simplified longitudinal beam-spring model is established to accurately model the longitudinal behavior of the tunnel, considering the opening and dislocation between segmental rings. The proposed method is verified through various cases and compared with other analytical methods, demonstrating its effectiveness in capturing tunnel segmental ring and joint deformation.

Numerical Study on the Effect of Large Deep Foundation Excavation on Underlying Complex Intersecting Tunnels

Xiang Zhao et al.

Summary: In this paper, the effect of large deep foundation excavations on existing tunnels with complex geometry was analyzed using a three-dimensional finite element model. The results showed that excavation of the foundation pit caused heave deformation in the tunnels, which followed a normal distribution. The excavations had minimal horizontal and vertical displacements and convergences in the tunnels, meeting the control requirements. Stress concentration was observed at the intersections of multiple tunnels during construction, but the lining stress slightly decreased as excavation progressed.

Summary: The study found that soil improvement and grouting around the tunnel can effectively mitigate ground settlements, earth pressure changes, soil heave at the excavation base, tunnel heave, and bending moments. This effectiveness may come from the restriction effects of soil improvement on the diaphragm wall and ground, as well as the strengthening effects of grouting on tunnel-soil interactions.
