Recovery of platinum from spent automotive catalyst based on hydrometallurgy

Tao Ge et al.

Summary: Platinum (Pt) is a critical raw material for automotive catalytic converters due to its high-temperature stability, corrosion resistance, and catalytic activity. However, its limited primary resources and uneven distribution make it difficult to meet the growing demand. Spent automotive catalyst (SAC) is currently the most important secondary resource of platinum, with a higher platinum content than primary sources. This paper provides an overview of the technologies for platinum recovery from SAC, with a focus on enrichment and refining processes based on hydrometallurgical techniques. Future directions for research and development in platinum recovery from SAC are also proposed.

Platinum group metals recycling from spent automotive catalysts: metallurgical extraction and recovery technologies

Jinsong Xia et al.

Summary: Platinum group metals (PGMs), essential in various catalytic industries, are found abundantly in Spent Automotive Catalysts (SAC) and have higher grades than natural ores. However, the low recycling rate of SAC in many countries leads to the loss of valuable resources. This paper reviews the technologies for recycling PGMs from SAC, including metallurgical extraction and solution purification techniques, discussing the mechanisms, discoveries, challenges, and providing suggestions for future research and industrial applications. Overall, it presents a critical perspective on the current advances in PGMs recycling from SAC.

Separation of platinum group metals using deep eutectic solvents based on quaternary ammonium salts

Olga Mokhodoeva et al.

Summary: A new technique for selective separation and enrichment of platinum group metals without the use of chelating agents is presented. The process involves extracting precious metals into a hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent and re-extracting them with ammonium hydroxide and nitric acid solutions. The technique has a high extraction efficiency for platinum, palladium, ruthenium, iridium, and rhodium.

Independent gradient model based on Hirshfeld partition: A new method for visual study of interactions in chemical systems

Tian Lu et al.

Summary: The powerful independent gradient model (IGM) method has limitations in graphically studying weak interactions. In this article, an improved version of IGM, called IGM based on Hirshfeld partition (IGMH), is proposed to overcome the shortcomings. The rigorous physical background of IGMH is demonstrated through various application examples, showcasing its important value in intuitively understanding interactions in chemical systems.

Urea-Introduced Ionic Liquid for the Effective Extraction of Pt(IV) and Pd(II) Ions

Yuki Ueda et al.

Summary: By changing the pH region, the urea-introduced imidazolium-based ionic liquid can selectively extract Pt(IV) and Pd(II) ions. The extraction equilibrium time for Pd(II) is much shorter in the ionic liquid extraction system compared to the conventional organic extraction system. The extraction mechanism involves anion-exchange and ligand-exchange reactions.

Calix[n]arenes and its derivatives as organocatalysts

Garima Sachdeva et al.

Summary: Organocatalysts, small organic compounds that replicate the actions of enzymes and inorganic catalysts, have the advantages of being inexpensive, less toxic, and widely available. Calix[n]arenes, vase-shaped supramolecules with a hollow cavity, have been extensively used in host-guest chemistry. The cavities of calix[n]arene scaffolds, their well-defined conformation, and non-covalent interactions play an important role in organocatalysis. This review covers the developments and future perspectives in the use of calixarene in organocatalysis, highlighting substrate scopes and analyzing mechanistic aspects when required.
