Enhanced energy recovery from landfill leachate by linking light and dark bio-reactions: Underlying synergistic effects of dual microalgal interaction

Haixing Chang et al.

Summary: A combined technique of microalgae photosynthesis and dark fermentation was proposed to efficiently reclaim nutrients and COD from landfill leachate, and convert microalgae biomass into biohydrogen and VFAs. The interaction between Scenedesmus obliquus and Chlorella vulgaris was enhanced by extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), leading to better absorption of nutrients and higher energy yield. This work fills the knowledge gaps of dual microalgal interactions and provides insights for the disposal of landfill leachate and bioenergy production.

MicroAlgal Biofilm Reactor (MABR) - Evaluation of Biomass Support Materials and Nitrate Removal Performance

Yanxia Lin et al.

Summary: Microalgal biofilms are highly beneficial systems that can reduce the cost of dewatering operations. The choice of support material is crucial for generating high solids biomass slurries. This study screened different materials to find the best support material for algal biofilms, and evaluated their attachment capability and nutrient removal performance. The results showed that cotton duck as a support material had the highest average biomass productivity in a stationary flood-and-drain system.

How Physical Interactions Shape Bacterial Biofilms

Berenike Maier

Summary: Biofilms are structured communities formed by one or multiple microbial species, where bacteria adjust cell-to-cell interactions by tuning expression levels of surface and extracellular matrix components. Deciphering how gene expression changes affect physical interactions within biofilms is a key challenge, while bacteria control physical interactions to maximize their fitness is an emerging theme.
