Benefits realisation in an agile environment

Carl Marnewick et al.

Summary: This article explores the importance of benefits realisation in IT projects and its correlation with the agile approach. The study conducted interviews with experts from nine organisations that adopted a scaled agile framework, revealing that benefits realisation management is not systematically implemented. However, the success of IT projects was still attributed to the agile approach rather than benefits realisation management. The article also proposes twelve principles to enhance agile benefits realisation management and improve project success.

Benefits management in software development: A systematic review of empirical studies

Knut Kjetil Holgeid et al.

Summary: Most organizations identify and structure benefits at the outset of a project, but fewer implement benefits management (BM) as a continuous process throughout the project lifecycle. Empirical evidence supports the positive impact of BM practices such as identifying and structuring benefits, planning benefits realization, BM during project execution, benefits evaluation, and having responsible individuals for benefits realization. The authors suggest four research directions to further understand the adoption and impact of BM practices.
