Ultramicroextraction as a miniaturization of the already miniaturized. A step toward nanoextraction and beyond

Cristian Azorin et al.

Summary: Miniaturization of the analytical process is a common trend, including the sample preparation stage. Microextraction techniques have become a strong approach in this field, but some original approaches did not fully adhere to the principles of Green Analytical Chemistry. Recent advancements have focused on reducing toxic reagents, the extraction phase, and finding greener and more selective extractant materials. However, there hasn't been sufficient attention given to reducing sample size, which is important for low-availability samples and portable devices. This review provides an overview of the progress in miniaturization of microextraction techniques and proposes the term "ultramicroextraction" for approaches beyond microextraction.

How environmentally friendly is the analytical process? A paradigm overview of ten greenness assessment metric approaches for analytical methods

Mohamed S. Imam et al.

Summary: Green chemistry principles have been integrated into various branches of chemistry, including analytical chemistry, due to the growing concern for the environment. Analytical procedures have the potential to cause environmental damage and pose risks to operators. Therefore, it is important to consider the consequences and implications of researchers' and users' activities in analytical techniques. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the history of Green Analytical Chemistry (GAC) and the existing greenness assessment metric tools. It also explores the relevance of these tools in different analytical approaches and examines their strengths and weaknesses.

A new need, quality, and sustainability (NQS) index for evaluating chemical analysis procedures using natural reagents

Kanokwan Kiwfo et al.

Summary: The use of natural extracts as chemical reagents in flow analysis and downscaling techniques provides a greener development in chemical analysis. The Green Analytical Procedure Index (GAPI) and the White Analytical Chemistry (WAC) are used to evaluate the environmental friendliness, analytical efficiency, and practicability of flow-based and downscaling procedures using natural reagents. These procedures are more environmentally friendly but less effective than standard analytical ones. However, the proposed Need, Quality, and Sustainability (NQS) index suggests that the use of natural reagents improves analytical procedures, especially in terms of need and sustainability. The NQS index can contribute to the development of analytical procedures that address social needs, analytical performance, and global sustainability.
