The organic petrology of vitrinite-like maceral in the Lower Paleozoic shales: Implications for the thermal maturity evaluation

Jin Wu et al.

Summary: VLM is a dispersed organic matter found in Lower Paleozoic marine shales. Its reflectance can be used as an indicator for thermal maturity evaluation. The optical properties and reflectance characteristics of VLM were examined in this study, showing similarities to vitrinite. The study also calculated the equivalent vitrinite reflectance values for different shales, indicating their maturity levels.

Chemical structure and thermal maturation of the vitrinite-like maceral in the Lower Paleozoic shales: Insights from Raman spectroscopy of artificial pyrolysis residues

Jin Wu et al.

Summary: Vitrinite-like macerals (VLM) are commonly used as a substitute for classical vitrinite in evaluating the thermal maturity of marine shales. However, the molecular structure of VLM itself has received limited attention. In this study, Raman spectroscopy was used to investigate the molecular structures and thermal evolution of VLM in natural and artificial shales. The results showed that the molecular structure of VLM gradually evolved with increasing thermal maturity, similar to classical vitrinite. Raman spectroscopy, particularly the RBS parameter, proved to be a useful tool for evaluating the thermal maturity of VLM-rich sediments.

Rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) distribution pattern of lower Cambrian organic-rich shale in Yichang area, Western Hubei Province, South China, and source of carbonate minerals

Huan Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the lower Cambrian shale formations in the Yichang area of Western Hubei Province, South China, and identifies the presence of abundant carbonate in the rocks, which could enhance the retention of shale gas. The study also examines the distribution of different carbonate minerals in the rocks and analyzes the composition of the rocks. The results show that the different types of carbonate in the Yichang area have distinct geochemical characteristics. These findings are important for the exploration of shale gas in the lower Cambrian formations in the Yichang area.

SEM petrography of dispersed organic matter in black shales: A review

Bei Liu et al.

Summary: This article reviews the petrographic characteristics of dispersed organic matter (DOM) in black shales under the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The correlative microscopy technique combining reflected-light and electron microscopy is found to be the most effective method for identifying both the types and hosted pores of organic matter. Factors controlling the formation and preservation of organic matter-hosted pores are also discussed. The findings suggest that the specific surface area and pore volume of organic matter in black shales follow parabolic patterns with increasing thermal maturity.

Summary: This article analyzed the geological characteristics, gas composition, and carbon isotopic characteristics of the Cambrian Niutitang shale. The shale gas from this formation is high-quality methane gas, primarily dry gas, and belongs to thermogenic gas. However, some data points indicate deviations from thermogenic gas, which can be attributed to the high maturity of the source rock.

Summary: This study investigates the role of metamorphism in the nitrogen cycle and its impact on shale reservoirs. The results reveal the importance of silicate-bound nitrogen in controlling the formation of N-2-rich gas in shale reservoirs. These N-2-rich rocks may have affected the surface environment through tectonic movement.

Maturity and thermal evolution differences between two sets of Lower Palaeozoic shales and its significance for shale gas formation in south-western Sichuan Basin, China

Ye Wang et al.

Summary: Organic matter reflectance measurement and Raman spectra analysis were conducted on shale samples from two wells in the Sichuan Basin, revealing that graptolite fragments and pyrobitumens are dominant in the Wufeng-Longmaxi shale, while a limited amount of pyrobitumens and vitrinite-like particles are present in the Qiongzhusi shale. Based on the results, it was found that the Wufeng-Longmaxi shale had lower maturities before the Late Permian compared to the Qiongzhusi shale, indicating a favorable time relationship for generation and accumulation of shale gas in the former.

Comparison of in-source solid bitumen with migrated solid bitumen from Ediacaran-Cambrian rocks in the Upper Yangtze region, China

Lipeng Yao et al.

Summary: In-source solid bitumen was discovered in an overmature black shale in Guizhou, China, providing a substitute for studying the physical and chemical properties of in-situ solid bitumen. The in-source solid bitumen displays a homogeneous structure distinct from the migrated bitumen in the Ediacaran-Cambrian carbonate reservoir. The stable carbon isotope ratios and distribution patterns of trace elements suggest a connection between the insource solid bitumen and the migrated bitumen, supporting the tracing of oil and gas sources in the area.

Summary: The study investigated the thermal evolution behavior of overmature Precambrian to Lower Paleozoic marine shales from China, focusing on the role of vitrinite-like maceral (VLM) and in-source solid bitumen in determining thermal maturity. By heat-treating original shales and coal samples, it was found that VLM and in-source solid bitumen play important roles in indicating thermal maturity levels in sediments from the Precambrian to Cambrian periods.

Anomalously high enrichment of mercury in early Cambrian black shales in South China

Guangyou Zhu et al.

Summary: The lower Cambrian black shales reflect a significant anoxic event during a global transgression, recording synergistic changes in the marine environment and biological evolution. High Hg contents observed in the Danquan section of South China suggest extensive volcanic activities during the early Cambrian, with redox conditions being euxinic. Volcanic activities and geographical settings constrain the evolution of life, as well as redox conditions.

Formation, preservation and connectivity control of organic pores in shale

Tenger Borjigin et al.

Summary: Organic pore development is controlled by the type, maturity, and decomposition of organic matter, while the preservation of organic pores is influenced by maturity and diagenesis. The connectivity of pores depends on the abundance and distribution of organic matter. Different types of shale have varying characteristics in the formation and connection of organic pores, grain margin fractures, and bedding fractures.
