Distinct responses of abundant and rare foraminifera to environmental variables in the Antarctic region revealed by DNA metabarcoding

Qingxia Li et al.

Summary: The Antarctic region is crucial for regulating global climate and documenting environmental change. Foraminiferal ancient DNA provides a new approach for understanding environmental change, but the relationship between foraminiferal molecular diversity and environmental conditions in the Antarctic region is not well understood. This study assessed the relationship between foraminiferal molecular diversity and environmental variables in the Southern Ocean using a DNA metabarcoding dataset. The results revealed distinct biogeographical patterns and correlations with environmental variables for abundant and rare foraminiferal subcommunities, highlighting the potential of foraminiferal ancient DNA as proxies for reconstructing past environments and predicting the impact of future environmental changes on polar biodiversity.

RNA outperforms DNA-based metabarcoding in assessing the diversity and response of microeukaryotes to environmental variables in the Arctic Ocean

Hejun Kong et al.

Summary: This study provided a vertical assessment of microeukaryote communities in the Arctic Ocean using high-throughput sequencing of co-extracted DNA and RNA, which revealed that RNA extracts depicted microeukaryote community structure and intergroup correlations more accurately and responded more sensitively to environmental conditions than those derived from DNA. The study also found a significant parasitism relationship between Syndiniales and dinoflagellates/ciliates in the deep ocean.

Potential effects of climate change on the habitat suitability of macrobenthos in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea

Yong Xu et al.

Summary: Species distribution models were used to assess the potential effects of climate change on macrobenthos in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea. The study found that different species displayed varying reactions to future climate scenarios, with changes influenced by thermal tolerance. These findings provide valuable insight into the impact of climate change on marine benthic ecosystems.

Changes in the Abundance and Taxonomic Composition of Benthic Heterotrophic Protists from Atlantic Sublittoral to Deep-Sea Sediments

Manon Hohlfeld et al.

Summary: This study investigated the abundance and taxonomic composition of benthic protist communities near the Azores' archipelago. The findings show that the abundance of protists decreases with increasing depth and the community composition changes. Some species are limited to specific depths while others are present at the deep-sea floor.

Sedimentary microeukaryotes reveal more dispersal limitation and form networks with less connectivity than planktonic microeukaryotes in a highly regulated river

Juan Chen et al.

Summary: The study showed distinct differences in community composition between planktonic and sedimentary microeukaryotes, as well as between natural and regulated sites in the river. Environmental and spatial variables were associated with patterns in community composition, with neutral models fitting the distributions well. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed different connectivity and interaction patterns between planktonic and sedimentary microeukaryotic networks, with keystone species playing essential roles in stability.

Horizontal and vertical small-scale patterns of protist communities at the Atlantic deep-sea floor

Manon Hohlfeld et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant differences in spatial distribution of deep-sea protists, with only a small percentage of species shared between different deep-sea regions. Even at small spatial scales, there were large variations in protist communities, indicating an underestimated complexity of deep-sea microbial food webs.

Protistan-Bacterial Microbiota Exhibit Stronger Species Sorting and Greater Network Connectivity Offshore than Nearshore across a Coast-to-Basin Continuum

Ping Sun et al.

Summary: This study revealed the differential actions of selection and dispersal limitation and species association across a coast-to-basin continuum on the marine protistan-bacterial microbiome. Temperature was identified as a crucial factor driving the structure and co-occurrence of protistan and bacterial communities. The differences in community assembly and association patterns between nearshore and offshore of the main constituents of the ocean microbiota should be considered to understand their current and future configurations, especially in the context of climate change.
