Topological Insulator Bi2Te3: The Effect of Doping with Elements from the VIII B Column of the Periodic Table

Stanislav Cichon et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the doping effects on a Bi2Te3 single crystal by using angle-resolved photoemission and ab initio electronic structure calculations. It was found that the typical bulk p-type conductivity was transformed into n-type conductivity at the surface. Dopants from the VIII B column (Fe, Ru, and Os) resulted in a shift of the surface Dirac cone towards the conductivity band minimum from the valence band maximum. The rearrangement of the surface electronic structure of Bi2Te3 caused by doping was linked to the pinning of the Fermi level within the bulk gap, and it was determined that the dopants substitute Bi atoms rather than occupying interstitial positions.

Ab-initio electronic structure simulations of transition metal doped Bi2Se3 topological insulator

R. Kumar et al.

Summary: The study explored the effects of 3d transition metal doping on Bi2Se3 using density functional theory, focusing on structural changes, stability, magnetic properties, and bulk electronic band structure. The results show that interstitial doping of TM ions in Bi2Se3 results in it becoming an n-type semiconductor, a new finding in the field.
