Microbially driven fate of terrigenous particulate organic matter in oceans

Lianbao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the mechanism behind the missing terrestrial organic matter in the global ocean, attributing it to microbial processing. Through the degradation of high-carbon compounds by Bacteroidetes and subsequent degradation of nitrogenous organic matter by Planctomycetes and Proteobacteria, this study provides insights into the fate of terrigenous particulate organic matter in the ocean. The findings highlight the importance of riverine material input in marine carbon and nitrogen cycling.

Spatial Discrepancy of Hydrodynamics-Driven Impacts on Organic Biomarkers Deposition and U37K' and TEX86 Temperature Proxies Applications

Rui Xiao et al.

Summary: There is evidence that sedimentary organic matter is easily transported laterally under hydrodynamic processes, which limits the applicability of molecular proxies. This study examines the abundances of marine and terrestrial biomarkers in different grain-size fractions of surface sediments in the South Yellow Sea to understand the spatial influences of hydrodynamic processes on biomarker distributions and their applications. The results suggest that lateral transportation of alkenones and isoprenoid Glycerol Dialkyl Glycerol Tetraethers by nearshore coastal currents may cause spatial deviations between proxies-derived sea surface temperature (SST) and satellite-derived SST. A spatial-SST correction approach is proposed to obtain more accurate SST information by removing the hydrodynamically introduced bias. This investigation contributes to the understanding of biogeochemical dynamics of sedimentary organic carbon pump in the shallow ocean, particularly in passive continental marginal seas with strong hydrodynamic conditions.

Greta Reintjes et al.

Summary: Particulate organic matter is crucial in the marine carbon cycle for transporting organic carbon from surface to deep oceans. By analyzing particles and their microbiomes, we found significant differences between particle-attached and free-living bacterial communities in terms of composition, dynamics, and catabolic potential. We also discovered the dominance of specific bacterial taxa and their roles in glycan degradation, indicating niche diversification in particle-attached bacteria.

Estimation of ship-induced sediment resuspension in intertidal waterways based on field measurements at the Hooghly River, India

Mainak Chakraborty et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of ship waves on sediment resuspension in tidal-driven waterways through a field survey. Time-frequency analysis was proven to be an effective tool for separating high-frequency ship waves from tides. Ship-generated suspended sediment concentration (SSC) was estimated using backscattering intensity from acoustic sensors after calibration. The individual effect of each ship wake event on sediment resuspension was estimated by filtering the ship-generated SSC. The contribution of ship waves to the ambient SSC during the survey tenure was approximately 24.66%, and the estimated sediment flux by ship waves in a calendar year could be 1.46 * 106g/m^2. Finally, a new empirical equation to predict sediment flux based on the depth Froude number is proposed for long-term SSC analysis after calibration and validation.

Terrestrial organic carbon age and reactivity in the Yellow River fueling efficient preservation in marine sediments

Yushuang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study used ramped oxidation radiocarbon analysis to investigate the age and reactivity distribution of organic carbon (OC) transported by the Yellow River and preserved in Chinese marginal sea sediments. The results showed that the Yellow River suspended sediments mainly contain aged biospheric loess OC, and terrestrial OC has a high preservation rate in the marginal sea sediments. However, the preservation of terrestrial OC decreases with increasing activation energy.

Summary: Particle-attached microbes play important roles in the ocean carbon cycle by sequestering atmospheric CO2 and delivering nutrients and energy to the deep sea through sinking particles. Genomic traits of particle-attached versus free-living microbes reflect their specific metabolic and ecological roles in the sea, with particle-attached microbes showing larger genomes, better degradation capacities, and higher growth efficiencies compared to free-living counterparts.

Summary: Microbial communities in the Arctic Ocean are still poorly understood, but recent studies have shown the presence of unique microbial community members adapted to extreme environmental conditions. In comparing two commonly used primer sets (V3-V4 and V4-V5) for studying microbial communities in Arctic marine habitats, it was found that both sets represent the total microbial community composition effectively down to the genus rank, with the V4-V5 primer set providing coverage of both bacterial and archaeal domains for a more comprehensive study.
