Structural and Photophysical Properties of Guanidinium-Iodide-Treated Perovskite Solar Cells

Mostafa Othman et al.

Summary: The use of guanidinium iodide (GAI) cation as an interface engineering technique in perovskite solar cells improves stability by passivating defects on surfaces and grain boundaries. However, the relationship between structural and photophysical properties is not well understood. This study demonstrates that an optimal concentration of GAI can eliminate excess PbI2, improve crystallinity, and increase grain size. Higher concentrations induce the formation of new phases and reduce crystallinity and grain size. GAI treatment also helps remove microscale heterogeneities, resulting in optimum device performance.

First-principles calculations and device characterizations of formamidinium-cesium lead triiodide perovskite crystals stabilized by germanium or copper

Ayu Enomoto et al.

Summary: To prevent the formation of the photo-inactive d-phase of formamidinium-cesium lead triiodide, copper or germanium was added to the perovskite compounds to stabilize the photoactive a-phase. The substitution of lead by germanium (Ge) or copper (Cu) was found to stabilize the a-phase. First-principles molecular dynamics calculations showed that the displacements of formamidinium molecules were suppressed by Ge doping. X-ray diffraction results indicated that Ge or Cu doping of the perovskite compounds effectively suppressed the phase transition from a- to d-phase.

First-principles calculation analysis and photovoltaic properties of Cu compound-added perovskite solar cells

Riku Okumura et al.

Summary: Experiments and first-principles calculations were conducted to study the effects of Cu substitution in CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite crystals. The calculations showed that the Cu d orbital formed above the VB maximum could act as an acceptor or defect level. The impact of Cu addition on device properties was investigated, and the device with 2% Cu exhibited higher efficiencies than the standard device. However, the decrease in short-circuit current density with increasing Cu content was attributed to the defect level of the Cu d orbitals. The first-principles calculations and experimental results provided insights into the role of Cu in CH3NH3-based perovskite crystals.

Effects of Co-Addition of Guanidinium and Cesium to CH3NH3PbI3 Perovskite Solar Cells

Takeo Oku et al.

Summary: The effects of co-additions of guanidinium (GA) and cesium (Cs) on methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI(3)) perovskite solar cells were studied. First-principles calculations showed a decrease in total energy by the addition of GA. Although the co-addition of GA/Cs was found to decrease carrier mobilities, it improved the device performance. This improvement can be attributed to enhanced grain growth and reduced defects. The changes in conversion efficiencies of the best performing device were small, indicating the effectiveness of the GA/Cs co-addition for device stability.

Summary: This study reveals the key role of organic ligands in the structural stability and morphological evolution of layered perovskites. The presence of hydration-prone BDA ligands in perovskites leads to decreased intrinsic stability and deteriorated optoelectronic properties during ambient aging. On the other hand, the presence of GA ligands enhances the intrinsic structural stability and optoelectronic properties, resulting in less performance degradation during aging.
