High-resolution cryo-electron microscopy structure of block copolymer nanofibres with a crystalline core

Jia Tian et al.

Summary: High-resolution cryo-electron microscopy is used to obtain detailed structures of solvated corona chains and sub-nanometre crystalline core lattice of polymer-based nanofibres in solution. This research provides important insights into the formation of uniform core-shell micellar nanoparticles using crystallizable block copolymers and pi-stacking molecular amphiphiles. The findings show the highly ordered crystal lattice of poly(ferrocenyldimethylsilane)-b-4-vinylpyridine nanofibres, providing a basis for further molecular modelling analysis.

Uniform Two-Dimensional Crystalline Platelets with Tailored Compositions for pH Stimulus-Responsive Drug Release

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional, size-tunable, water-dispersible particle micelles with spatially defined chemistries were created using living crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) approach. Uniform platelets with tailored compositions were designed and used for efficient encapsulation of a hydrophobic drug. These drug-loaded platelets exhibited pH-responsive release behavior due to the protonated-deprotonated process of P4VP blocks. This study provides insight into biocompatible PCL platelets with low dispersity and precise chemistry control in stimulus-responsive drug delivery fields.

On-demand microfluidic mixing by actuating integrated magnetic microwalls

Stef Broeren et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed an on-demand micromixer based on magnetic microwalls, which can achieve controllable mixing and complete mixing shut-off in commercial microfluidic devices. The microwalls can create a meandering path in the main channel to enable mixing or open up the channel to stop mixing, controlled by a simple magnet. Experimental results show that the microwalls can effectively enhance mixing in colored fluids with different flow rates and viscosities.

Single crystals and two-dimensional crystalline assemblies of block copolymers

Chen Yang et al.

Summary: In this paper, the morphology, surface structure, and related influencing factors of block copolymer single crystals (BCPSCs) are reviewed. The studies of 2D crystalline assemblies of block copolymers driven by crystallization and intermolecular pi-pi interaction are summarized. Moreover, the functionalization and properties of BCPSCs and 2D crystalline assemblies of BCPs are introduced. Finally, some unsolved problems in this field are proposed.

Role of Competitive Crystallization Kinetics in the Formation of 2D Platelets with Distinct Coronal Surface Patterns via Seeded Growth

Renhua Deng et al.

Summary: Low dispersity 2D platelet micelles with controllable surface patterns were prepared by seeded-growth/living crystallization driven self-assembly method. The morphology of the micelles can be controlled by adjusting various parameters such as the proportion of the corona block, the crystallization rate ratio, and the polymer structure.

Comprehensive studies of continuous flow reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer copolymerization and its application for photoimaging materials

Jiyeong Yeo et al.

Summary: In this study, we conducted thorough investigations on the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) copolymerization of industrially relevant functional monomers using propylene glycol monomethyl ether as a solvent in a continuous flow system. The kinetic studies showed that the flow mode RAFT copolymerization exhibited pseudo-first-order kinetics with a significantly increased propagation rate constant compared to the conventional batch process. The obtained copolymer products showed excellent homogeneity in molecular weight, dispersity, and composition. Additionally, flow chemistry allowed the determination of reactivity ratios for eight different monomer pairs, and the results were validated by comparison with the experimentally determined compositions. The applicability of flow copolymerization in practical photolithography was confirmed by positive tone pattern formation in a chemically amplified resist formulation. Our comprehensive exploration provided fundamental insights into the reactivity and kinetics of continuous flow RAFT copolymerization, enabling the precise control of structural and compositional parameters on a large scale and addressing the challenges in pioneering technologies such as photolithography for single-nanometer digit pattern development.
