Characterization of Austenitic Stainless Steels with Regard to Environmentally Assisted Fatigue in Simulated Light Water Reactor Conditions

Matthias Bruchhausen et al.

Summary: The European INCEFA-PLUS project investigated the fatigue life of austenitic steels and found that mean strain and hold time have minimal impact on fatigue life. An empirical model describing fatigue life was developed, and there were statistically significant interaction effects between surface roughness and the environment, as well as between surface roughness and strain range, though their practical relevance is small.

Microstructure-Based Lifetime Assessment of Austenitic Steel AISI 347 in View of Fatigue, Environmental Conditions and NDT

Ruth Acosta et al.

Summary: The assessment of metallic materials used in power plants' piping is challenging due to thermal transients and environmental conditions. A collaborative project is developing a methodology for materials' degradation assessment, which combines NDT techniques, fatigue lifetime analysis, and numerical simulations. The project aims to validate the methodology through analyzing AISI 347 and evaluating a pressurized hot water pipe exposed to various flow conditions.

A Short-Time Approach for Fatigue Life Evaluation of AISI 347 Steel for Nuclear Power Energy Applications

Tobias Bill et al.

Summary: AISI 347 austenitic steel is commonly used in nuclear energy piping systems due to its resistance to high stresses, however, the material's properties can change significantly over time, especially when exposed to corrosive influences. The StrainLife procedure, developed as part of the MiBaLeB project, allows for a more efficient assessment of aging materials by determining a complete S-N curve with only three fatigue tests. This approach is particularly useful for rare aged materials where a cost-effective solution is needed.
