High-temperature biofilm system based on heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification treating high-strength ammonia wastewater: Nitrogen removal performances and temperature-regulated metabolic pathways

Ziyuan Lin et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the HNAD process at high temperature effectively removes nitrogen from wastewater, with heterotrophic nitrification being the main process for ammonia oxidation and both aerobic and anoxic pathways contributing to denitrification. High-throughput sequencing and metagenomic analysis revealed the dominant microbial species and metabolic pathways in the system, showing an up-regulation of carbon metabolism with increasing temperature which promoted nitrogen removal.

Influence mechanism of C/N ratio on heterotrophic nitrification- aerobic denitrification process

Xin Gu et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing the C/N ratio can enhance the HNAD performance of Acinetobacter junii ZHG-1, but the effect diminishes when the C/N ratio exceeds 30. Therefore, more research efforts should focus on the influence mechanism of different environmental factors on the HNAD process.

Planktonic bacteria in white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and channel catfish (Letalurus punetaus) aquaculture ponds in a salt-alkaline region

K. Li et al.

Summary: Aquaculture in salt-alkaline regions in China affects planktonic bacterial community structure, reduces bacterial diversity, and is significantly correlated with environmental parameters. Bacterial phyla are associated with alkalinity and salinity, with white shrimp aquaculture potentially serving as a dealkalization solution in inland salt-alkaline regions.

Nitrogen Removal Characteristics and Constraints of an Alphaproteobacteria with Potential for High Nitrogen Content Heterotrophic Nitrification-Aerobic Denitrification

Nan Zhang et al.

Summary: The discovery of heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) microorganisms has opened up new possibilities for wastewater treatment. In this study, a new HN-AD microorganism, Pannonibacter sp. W30, was isolated and characterized. It showed high efficiency in aerobic inorganic nitrogen transformation and primarily depleted nitrogen through assimilation rather than denitrification. Compared to known Alphaproteobacterial HN-AD microbes, Pannonibacter sp. W30 had the potential to develop a suitable HN-AD technology for treating N-laden wastewater at a full-scale level.

Occurrence of heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification induced by decreasing salinity in a halophilic AGS SBR treating hypersaline wastewater

Ji-Lin Huang et al.

Summary: Heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) is a promising method for nitrogen removal, and this study found that autotrophic nitrification can be converted into HN-AD in a halophilic aerobic granular sludge (HAGS) system. HAGS with dominant bacteria affiliated to Paracoccus showed stable performance in removing total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) in response to salinity variations, and HN-AD was inhibited under extreme salinity conditions.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of using a heterotrophic nitrifying-aerobic denitrifying strain to enhance the biological contact oxidation process. The results show that adding the strain RW can effectively improve the removal of ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, and dichromate oxidizability in sewage. Additionally, the addition of RW significantly impacts the biodiversity of Acinetobacter genus in both water and biofilm.

A novel Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain performs simultaneous heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification and aerobic phosphate removal

Mei-Qi Huang et al.

Summary: A novel strain affiliated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated in this study, which was capable of heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification and aerobic phosphate removal. Under optimal conditions, the strain showed high removal efficiencies of ammonium (87%) and phosphate (97%). Gene amplification experiments revealed that the ammonium removal followed the complete HN-AD pathway, while phosphate removal only occurred under aerobic conditions.

Effect of dissolved oxygen on high C/N wastewater treatment in moving bed biofilm reactors based on heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification: Nitrogen removal performance and potential mechanisms

Xueying Bian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of different dissolved oxygen concentrations on nitrogen removal in high C/N wastewater treatment. The results showed that dissolved oxygen concentration significantly affected the efficiency of total nitrogen removal. Within a certain range, increasing dissolved oxygen concentration improved the removal efficiency, but excessively high concentrations did not further promote nitrogen removal. The influence of dissolved oxygen concentration on nitrogen removal was influenced by the combined action of functional bacteria and electron flow.

Summary: WT14, a newly isolated strain of Alcaligenes faecalis, showed promising nitrogen removal efficiency, with the ability to efficiently remove ammonium nitrogen under specific environmental conditions and exhibit strong tolerance and rapid multiplication. It also demonstrated high nitrate or nitrite removal capacity when provided as the sole nitrogen source, setting it apart from other Alcaligenes faecalis species.
