Impact of Rhamnolipids (RLs), Natural Defense Elicitors, on Shoot and Root Proteomes of Brassica napus by a Tandem Mass Tags (TMTs) Labeling Approach

Elise Pierre et al.

Summary: The rapeseed crop is vulnerable to various pathogens, and the use of conventional plant protection products has negative effects on the environment and human health. Therefore, there is a growing need for more environmentally friendly alternative protection methods like biocontrol compounds. Natural rhamnolipids (RLs) can be used as plant defense elicitors and have biodegradable and non-toxic properties. However, the characterization of organ responsiveness to RLs is crucial for optimizing their effectiveness against different diseases. A quantitative proteomic analysis showed differential accumulation of defense or stress proteins in response to RL treatments, depending on the application method.

A novel membrane stirrer system enables foam-free biosurfactant production

Patrick Bongartz et al.

Summary: Bioreactors play a crucial role in the production of biopharmaceuticals, biomaterials, and sustainable substitutes for chemicals. However, the traditional aeration technique used in bioreactors has limitations such as shear stress, foaming, and sterility concerns. This study presents a membrane stirrer (MemStir) that combines simulations and experiments, providing efficient bubble-free aeration. The MemStir demonstrated excellent performance in a foam-free recombinant production process, delivering high oxygen transfer rates and demonstrating its potential for various applications including animal cell cultivation.

Electrodialysis desalination: The impact of solution flowrate (or Reynolds number) on fluid dynamics throughout membrane spacers

Sajjad Khudhur Abbas Al-Amshawee et al.

Summary: The inclusion of spacers between membranes has a significant impact on fluid dynamics and performance metrics. Spacers create feed channels and promote turbulence to enhance mixing and reduce polarization effects. However, spacer geometry is still not optimized and there is ongoing research on various spacer designs. This systematic review aims to analyze the influence of Reynolds number or solution flowrate on flow hydrodynamics in channels with spacers.

Human and natural impacts on the US freshwater salinization and alkalinization: A machine learning approach

E. Beibei et al.

Summary: Ongoing salinization and alkalinization in U.S. rivers are mainly caused by inputs of road salt and natural processes, respectively. Human activities, represented by population density and impervious surface area, contribute significantly to the salinity of U.S. rivers. On the other hand, the alkalinization in U.S. rivers is predominantly influenced by local climatic and hydrogeological conditions, as well as various natural processes such as run-off and sediment composition.

Bioreactor-scale production of rhamnolipids from food waste digestate and its recirculation into anaerobic digestion for enhanced process performance: Creating closed-loop integrated biorefinery framework

Davidraj Johnravindar et al.

Summary: This study successfully addressed the challenges of achieving industrially relevant productivities and efficiently integrating them into the existing industrial infrastructure in the circular economy by integrating next-generation rhamnolipids production with anaerobic digestion. The results showed that rhamnolipids can enhance sludge solubilization and digestion efficiency, although they may slow down methane production, which could be overcome by extending digestion time.

Bacterial rhamnolipids and their 3-hydroxyalkanoate precursors activate Arabidopsis innate immunity two independent mechanisms

Romain Schellenberger et al.

Summary: Plant innate immunity is activated by lipidic secretome from opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, including rhamnolipids and hydroxy fatty acids, through distinct mechanisms. While hydroxy fatty acids are sensed by a specific receptor kinase in plants, rhamnolipids trigger an atypical immune response independently of this receptor. The immune response triggered by rhamnolipids is influenced by the sphingolipid composition of the plasma membrane.
