Multichannel customer purchase behavior and long tail effects in the fashion goods market

Brian Ratchford et al.

Summary: The fast-paced growth of e-commerce has led to changes in consumers' purchasing behaviors, with a greater variety of products being bought online. However, the impact of e-commerce on product categories that require physical examination, such as fashion goods, may be different. This study analyzes data from two multichannel fashion goods retail brands and finds that the shift to online sales decreases the concentration of overall sales, but this is primarily due to consumers purchasing different products online rather than a greater variety. The results suggest that fashion apparel retailers do not need to offer broader assortments online, but they should consider carrying or emphasizing a different product mix online compared to offline, and carefully curate their online and offline assortments and inventory management strategies.
