Management of fracture risk in CKD-traditional and novel approaches

Mathias Haarhaus et al.

Summary: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk of fractures, and diagnosing and treating fracture risk in CKD patients can be challenging. This review discusses diagnostic and treatment options for fracture risk in CKD patients based on disease mechanisms, clinical experience, and research findings. The authors conclude that many approaches to diagnosing and treating osteoporosis can be applied to CKD patients.

Association of age-related declined renal function and osteoporosis based on trabecular bone score in Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) program

Mehdi Mahmudpour et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of age-related renal failure on bone quality and trabecular bone score in elderly individuals. The results showed that although there was a positive correlation between age-related renal failure and trabecular bone score, neck of femur BMD, and lumbar BMD in univariate linear regression analysis, these associations were not significant after adjusting for other factors. Therefore, it is hypothesized that age-related renal failure cannot be considered as an independent risk factor for osteoporosis in elderly individuals aged over 60 years old.

Time-Updated Changes in Estimated GFR and Proteinuria and Major Adverse Cardiac Events: Findings from the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) Study

Jordana B. Cohen et al.

Summary: The study found that the average and slope of eGFR and proteinuria are independently associated with cardiovascular disease risk. Lower eGFR and increasing proteinuria were significantly linked to higher risks of heart failure and composite cardiovascular events. The results suggest that monitoring kidney function changes over time may help in better managing patients with chronic kidney disease.

The Global Burden of Osteoporosis, Low Bone Mass, and Its Related Fracture in 204 Countries and Territories, 1990-2019

Yuyan Shen et al.

Summary: The global burden of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and deaths associated with low bone mineral density (LBMD) and its related fractures has significantly increased since 1990. There are differences in disease burden between regions and countries. These estimations can be useful for prioritizing, policy-making, and resource allocation in osteoporosis prevention and treatment.

Prediction Models for Osteoporotic Fractures Risk: A Systematic Review and Critical Appraisal

Xuemei Sun et al.

Summary: This systematic review evaluated the performance and methodological quality of osteoporotic fracture risk prediction models. The results showed that there are a certain number of models available, but few of them have been thoroughly validated and all models have methodological shortcomings. Future research should focus on validating, improving, and analyzing the impact of existing models.

Annual incidence of osteoporotic hip fractures in Iran: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Kiarash Tanha et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the annual incidence of osteoporotic fractures in Iran, showing a high incidence rate of osteoporotic hip fractures. The study recommends early detection and treatment of individuals with higher risks, as well as implementing fracture liaison services to prevent secondary fractures.

Sex-specific incidence rates and risk factors for fracture: A 16-year follow-up from the Tehran lipid and glucose study

Farzad Hadaegh et al.

Summary: The study found that central obesity, smoking, and steroid medication significantly increased the risk of fractures in the Iranian population, while obesity lowered the risk of fractures. Central obesity had a more prominent impact on fracture risk in women, while prediabetes status was associated with a lower risk of major osteoporotic fractures.
