Summary: The study shows that a goal-directed therapy algorithm based on the measurement of respiratory exchange ratio does not reduce major postoperative complications or mortality within seven days after high-risk surgery.

Summary: Goal-directed haemodynamic therapy during general anaesthesia may reduce mortality, hospital length of stay, and several postoperative complications. However, the certainty of evidence for these effects is low.

Factors associated with functional disability or mortality after elective noncardiac surgery: a prospective cohort study

Mitsuru Ida et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and factors associated with postoperative functional disability or all-cause mortality and describe the trajectory of disability in the population. The results showed that within one year after surgery, approximately one in ten patients experienced postoperative functional disability and one in 20 died. Potentially modifiable factors such as obesity and poor nutritional status were identified to be associated with these adverse outcomes.

Association between use of enhanced recovery after surgery protocols and postoperative complications in colorectal surgery in Europe: The EuroPOWER international observational study

Summary: Treatment in a self-declared ERAS center does not improve outcomes after colorectal surgery, but increased adherence to the ERAS pathway is associated with a significant reduction in postoperative complications, shorter hospital stay, and lower 30-day mortality.

Summary: The study suggests that goal-directed fluid therapy does not reduce the risk of major complications or death in patients undergoing emergency gastrointestinal surgery, but may prolong hospital stay.
