U-Pb dating of oil charge in superimposed basins: A case study from the Tarim Basin, NW China

Jiaxu Chen et al.

Summary: Dating the oil charge in superimposed basins is crucial for understanding the petroleum system's evolutionary history. This study determines the episodes of oil charge in the Tarim Basin's Tahe Oil-field using U-Pb dating of calcite veins. The research demonstrates that relying solely on fluid inclusion analysis to determine the timing of oil charge in superimposed basins can lead to uncertainties. The study highlights the importance of investigating the oil charge history in the Tarim Basin for a better understanding of its petroleum system.

Summary: This study deciphers the tectonic-fluid evolution history of fractures in the Ordovician carbonates in the Tarim Basin by analyzing different stages of void-filling calcite cements. It highlights the importance of fault-related fluid circulation in the development of hydrocarbon reservoirs.

Early accretion and prolonged carbonation of the Pacific Ocean's oldest crust

Mark A. Kendrick et al.

Summary: The newly formed Pacific Ocean crust began to accrete 25 million years earlier than previously recognized. The carbonation process peaked at 171 million years ago and continued at a low rate for over 65 million years. The carbonation rates during the Jurassic period varied but were similar to those observed today. These findings highlight the long-term significance of seafloor alteration in global volatile cycling.

Multi-Directional and Multiphase Tectonic Modification, and Hydrocarbon Differential Enrichment in the Middle-Upper Yangtze Region

Zhiliang He et al.

Summary: Based on the analysis of deformation styles in the Middle-Upper Yangtze region, this study identified five main tectonic deformation styles and their controlling effects on hydrocarbon accumulations. The distribution of hydrocarbon reservoirs is controlled by concealed structures, while areas with differential uplift and gentle deformation have formed extensive structural-lithologic hydrocarbon reservoirs. In strongly deformed areas, conventional hydrocarbon reservoirs are destroyed, but unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs are partially preserved. Marine strata in the Jianghan Basin have partially preserved unconventional gas resources. Secondary hydrocarbon generation is favorable for conventional hydrocarbon accumulations in marine strata.

Fault-controlled hydrothermal dolomitization of Middle Permian in southeastern Sichuan Basin, SW China, and its temporal relationship with the Emeishan Large Igneous Province: New insights from multi-geochemical proxies and carbonate U-Pb dating

Tianbo Yang et al.

Summary: The mechanism of fault-controlled hydrothermal dolomitization in the southeastern Sichuan Basin is studied using petrographic, geochemical, and chronological data. The results indicate a temporal relationship between the dolomitization and the Emeishan Large Igneous Province. This study provides insights into the dolomitization process and regional tectonic activities.

Structural styles and evolution of a thin-skinned fold-and-thrust belt with multiple detachments in the eastern Sichuan Basin, South China

Zhidong Gu et al.

Summary: The structural deformation of the eastern Sichuan Basin is mainly characterized by a thin-skinned fold-and-thrust belt, with competent layers separated by three main incompetent layers acting as detachments. The evolution of kink bands, detachment folds, and faulted detachment folds is revealed through integrated analyses of kinematics and balanced restoration.

Early-stage marine dolomite altered by hydrothermal fluids in the Middle Permian Maokou Formation in the eastern Sichuan Basin, Southern China

Ting Li et al.

Summary: Deciphering the dolomitization process of Maokou Formation in the Sichuan Basin provides insights into the role of hydrothermal fluids in dolomite formation, with some areas showing dolomitization and others indicating recrystallization due to hydrothermal fluids. This study highlights the complexity of dolomite formation in relation to hydrothermal processes in shallow-marine platforms.

Tectonic evolution of the Sichuan Basin, Southwest China

Shugen Liu et al.

Summary: Surface deformation in the Sichuan basin is influenced by two weak extension and compression episodes, leading to the formation of specific structures. The evolution of the basin appears to be controlled by deformation from its peripheral orogens rather than deep lithospheric and mantle processes.

Genesis of Dolomite in Middle Permian Maokou Formation in Eastern Sichuan: Constraints from In Situ Geochemistry, Sr-Mg Isotopes, and Fluid Inclusions

Yanxia Jiang et al.

Summary: The dolostone reservoir of the Middle Permian Maokou Formation in Eastern Sichuan has good prospects for oil and gas exploration. Study of dolomitizing genesis of the Maokou Formation is essential for predicting the distribution of the dolostone reservoir. Results show that the Maokou Formation experienced two stages of dolomitization, with early-formed dolomites having different characteristics compared to those formed in the late stage.

Triassic two-stage intra-continental orogensis of the South China Block, driven by Paleotethyan closure and interactions with adjoining blocks

Yuejun Wang et al.

Summary: The South China Block underwent two distinct Triassic deformations, including northward dextral thrusting and northeasterly sinistral transpression. These deformations shed light on the mechanism driving intra-continental omgenesis in the SCB and were influenced by the closure of the Paleotethyan Ocean and interactions with adjoining blocks.

Diagenetic conditions and geodynamic setting of the middle Permian hydrothermal dolomites from southwest Sichuan Basin, SW China: Insights from in situ U-Pb carbonate geochronology and isotope geochemistry

Liyin Pan et al.

Summary: Through LA-ICP-MS U-Pb geochronology and isotopic geochemistry, this study investigates hydrothermal dolomites in middle Permian carbonates from the southwest Sichuan Basin. The results suggest that these dolomites may have originated from syn-orogenic flow of basinal brines driven by thrust-related compression, rather than the previously proposed Emeishan large igneous province-related model.

No more blind dates with calcite: Fluid-flow vs. fault-slip along the Ockov thrust, Prague Basin

Nick M. W. Roberts et al.

Summary: Dating fracture-filling calcite with U-Pb geochronology is a useful technique for determining brittle deformation timing, but results may not always directly relate to fault motion. Petrographic and elemental analyses are crucial for interpreting U-Pb data from slickenfibre calcite, as internal textures can be altered by fluid infiltration, leading to variable U and Pb mobilisation. Specifically, the study of slickenfibres on the Ockov thrust in the Lower Palaezoic Prague Basin demonstrates the preservation of external textures and the destruction of primary textures, with potential uncertainties in the interpreted ages.
