EP-PINNs: Cardiac Electrophysiology Characterisation Using Physics-Informed Neural Networks

Clara Herrero Martin et al.

Summary: EP-PINNs is a new tool that accurately estimates electrophysiological parameters and simulates action potentials. It is capable of reconstructing the spatio-temporal evolution of action potentials, predicting parameters related to action potential duration, excitability, and diffusion coefficients. It can also detect fibrosis and other pathologies associated with arrhythmias. In in vitro preparations, EP-PINNs are effective in studying the effects of anti-arrhythmic drugs on action potentials.

Joint cardiac tissue conductivity and activation time estimation using confirmatory factor analysis

Miao Sun et al.

Summary: Mathematical models of cardiac tissue play a crucial role in studying heart rhythm disorders. This paper proposes an efficient method to jointly estimate the parameters of interest from the electrogram model. The results show that this method can reduce estimation errors and improve robustness.

Catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation: current indications and evolving technologies

Ramanathan Parameswaran et al.

Summary: Catheter ablation is a key strategy for managing atrial fibrillation, with technological advancements focusing on improving safety and effectiveness. Guidelines recommend the procedure for symptomatic patients with paroxysmal or persistent AF, but evidence from trials is mixed. Pulmonary vein isolation remains a cornerstone technique in AF ablation, with ongoing developments in technology aimed at enhancing patient outcomes.

Analyzing the effect of electrode size on electrogram and activation map properties

Bahareh Abdi et al.

Summary: The study explores the impact of electrode size on properties of recorded electrogram arrays using both simulated and clinical data. Results show that increasing electrode size can lead to higher error in LAT estimation, decreased conduction block lines length, more homogeneous activation maps, increased low voltage areas, and decreased slopes and number of deflections, with more pronounced effects in tissues with higher heterogeneity in conduction pattern. These findings should be taken into consideration in analysis and comparison of electrogram arrays related to atrial fibrillation.

Cardiac tissue conductivity estimation using confirmatory factor analysis

Miao Sun et al.

Summary: This study presents an algorithm to estimate tissue conductivity from epicardial electrograms using confirmatory factor analysis, addressing the ill-posed problem due to a large number of unknown parameters in electrophysiological data models. Numerical experiments on simulated data demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively localize conduction blocks in tissue and estimate smooth variations in conductivities, with results consistent with literature and clinical observations.
