Distracted to a fault: Attention, actions, and time perception

Katharina A. Schwarz et al.

Summary: In recent years, it has been widely accepted that actions influence our perception of time. Performing an action to produce a specific event appears to result in an underestimation of the time interval between the action and its effect, known as temporal binding. Temporal binding has been associated with our sense of agency, or the perceived control we have over our actions and environment, and has been utilized as a measure of sense of agency due to its strong behavioral effects. However, a new study suggests that attentional processes, rather than intention or action-effect sequences, may play a significant role in the binding effects observed in the Libet clock paradigms, challenging previous conclusions and interpretations regarding actions and time perception.

Sense of Agency in Social Hierarchies

Katharina A. Schwarz et al.

Summary: This study reports a new experimental paradigm to investigate the sense of agency in hierarchical settings for supervisors and subordinates. The results reveal significant differences in the sense of agency between both roles, as well as the additional influences of situational factors such as degrees of freedom, action decision versus execution, outcome valence, and veto options. Moreover, a strong coupling between the sense of agency and the sense of responsibility is observed, with weak links to affective responses to action outcomes.

To follow or not to follow: Influence of valence and consensus on the sense of agency

Moritz Reis et al.

Summary: Advice from others can influence our decisions, and compliance or non-compliance may lead to regrets or blaming others. Two online experiments were conducted to examine the influence of advice compliance and outcome on a person's sense of agency. The explicit measure showed that compliance with advice and gaining benefits increased the sense of agency, as well as dissenting choices. However, the implicit measure of temporal binding was not affected by advice compliance and was larger for losses compared to benefits.

Deceleration Assistance Mitigated the Trade-off Between Sense of Agency and Driving Performance

Wen Wen et al.

Summary: The study examined whether driving assistance can maintain human sense of agency during early deceleration in the face of collision risk. Results showed that drivers maintained their sense of agency and improved driving performance under driving assistance. Insights were provided into designing driving assistance that can maintain drivers' sense of agency while improving future driving performance.

Annika L. Klaffehn et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of manipulating certainty of actions and effects on temporal binding and suggests that relatively uncertain sensory signals are more likely to be shifted towards their counterparts in action-effect sequences. These findings support the idea of a multisensory approach to temporal binding.

Feelings of Culpability: Just Following Orders Versus Making the Decision Oneself

Maayan S. Malter et al.

Summary: The study found that participants felt more culpable when following their superior's order compared to making the decision themselves, contrary to previous expectations. This counterintuitive finding challenges previous assumptions about agency and culpability in decision-making scenarios.

Intentional action and limitation of personal autonomy. Do restrictions of action selection decrease the sense of agency?

S. Antusch et al.

Summary: The study found that being unable to decide how and when to perform actions does not affect the perceived temporal binding between action and effect, suggesting that the implicit sense of agency is not influenced by personal autonomy.
