Summary: The properties of biochar and their effects on agricultural soil health and environmental ecosystems depend on the feedstock, residence time, and pyrolysis conditions. Biochar can remove organic and inorganic contaminants from the soil as an adsorbent and improve soil quality, microbial activities, and carbon content. One of the great impacts of biochar is its ability to capture soil nutrients and sequester carbon.

Summary: Despite its significance for urban development sustainability, it is still unclear how industrial structure adjustment interacts with urban land use efficiency and how urbanization affects their interaction. In this study, we explore these interactions in China based on a panel dataset from 1978 to 2018. The results show that as urbanization proceeds, there is a positive linear correlation between industrial structure optimization and urban land use efficiency. However, the relationship between industrial structure upgrade and urban land use efficiency depends on the level of urbanization, following an inverted U-shape. The effect of urban land use efficiency on the optimization of industrial structure differs across provinces. We also find that higher levels of urbanization facilitate the positive interactions between industrial structure adjustment and urban land use efficiency in central and western regions of China, but this effect is attenuated in eastern China. We propose policy recommendations tailored to different regions with distinct levels of economic development status and industrial structure for urban development sustainability.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of green finance on environmental performance in developing countries. Using panel cointegration analysis and panel VECM, the study confirms the cointegration between carbon emissions (CO2) and green finance, real GDP, urbanization, and renewable energy in developing economies. The results show that both green finance and renewable energy have significant inhibitory effects on CO2 emissions, highlighting the importance of promoting these factors. The study also finds the existence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve and the increasing effects of urbanization on CO2 emissions. Several policy implications and recommendations are drawn from the study.

Summary: Electricity generated from fossil fuels has a negative impact on the environment, thus promoting green electricity is essential for sustainable development. This study investigates the influence of green electricity consumption (GEC), technological innovation (TEI), democracy (DEM), and economic growth (GR) on the ecological footprint (EF), and examines the moderating effects of democracy on EF in six ASEAN nations from 1995 to 2018. The empirical findings demonstrate that renewable electricity, TEI, and DEM contribute to improved ecological quality. Interestingly, democracy not only reduces the level of EF but also enhances the positive effects of technological innovation on environmental quality.

However, China's manufacturing industry is in the early stages of servitization and lacks the ability to provide services, resulting in limited environmental benefits. Therefore, achieving service-oriented, low-carbon development in the manufacturing industry while considering economic development has become an important topic.

This study examines the relationship between technological factors defining energy transition progress and carbon dioxide emissions in 20 European countries from 1995 to 2019 using consumption-based Kaya identity metrics. The findings indicate that energy and carbon intensities of the consumption mix have a positive relationship with CO2 emissions but a negative relationship with renewable energy consumption, highlighting the importance of renewable energy in mitigating consumption-induced emissions in Europe.

Measuring the land-use efficiency of resource-based cities and determining its main factors are crucial for improving efficiency and promoting the transformation. This study proposes a feasible analysis framework using multi-source remote sensing data and develops the urban land-use efficiency index (ULEI) to explore the spatial pattern of resource-based cities. The results show low land-use efficiency in resource-based cities at the county scale, with significant differences among cities in different growth stages.

Summary: The increase in consumption and resource use linked to human activity poses risks to energy security and sustainability, leading to a global restructuring of policy agendas to integrate environmental well-being through channels such as energy efficiency (EE). This study aims to analyze the relationship between energy efficiency, renewable energy, and financial development. Using a spatial econometrics model, the research finds spatial autocorrelation of EE among European countries and observes that the use of renewable energies promotes EE in neighboring economies. On the other hand, financial development has both positive and negative effects on EE, with the institutional component showing a positive impact and the stock market component showing a negative impact. The findings highlight the importance of renewable energy use in improving EE and the need for policy makers to develop mechanisms for greener and more sustainable development while encouraging efficient energy use.

The findings reveal a U-shaped relationship between ER&D and TFCP, and all types of government support positively moderate ER&D's impact on regional TFCP. Moreover, there is a spatial spillover effect of ER&D and government support on TFCP. This study offers policy implications for China and other developing countries regarding ER&D investment and TFCP improvement.

This study examines the relationship between economic growth, CO2 emissions, and agricultural value-added in selected African economies from 1997 to 2020. The findings show that economic growth significantly contributes to environmental pollution in Africa, while factors such as food price index, capital, and foreign direct investment also have an impact on pollution. Additionally, the study reveals that environmental pollution supports the growth-led pollution hypothesis. Furthermore, the research provides policy implications for Sub-Saharan African countries and other developing economies.

Summary: The study finds that China's green economic growth has been improving, with ecological civilization and social progress as the main drivers. However, innovation-driven development lags behind. There are significant regional differences in green economic growth, with the eastern region performing better than the central and western regions. These regional differences are shrinking over time. Factors such as population size, economic development level, technological innovation, industrial structure, urbanization, environmental regulation, and foreign direct investment have impacts on green economic growth, but the spatial effects of each factor are different. Policymakers should consider the spatiotemporal evolution of the green economy and its influencing factors when formulating targeted policies.

Summary: Rapid urbanization has had significant impacts on the ecological environment. This study aims to evaluate the coupling coordination degree between urban development systems and ecosystems, based on ecosystem service value. The results show that while the level of coupling coordination between urban development and ecosystems in Tangshan City is gradually improving, most areas have shifted from lagging urban development to lagging ecosystems, leading to an increasing contradiction between the two systems. Water supply, environment purification, and hydrological regulation are identified as the main factors influencing the coordinated development between urban development and ecosystems. These findings highlight the need for policymakers to continually monitor ecosystem service changes and formulate appropriate regulatory policies to ensure the provision of ecosystem services.
