Mutual Efficacy, Self-Efficacy, and Collective Efficacy Theory: An Examination of Empowerment and Activism

Michael C. Gearhart

Summary: Empowerment refers to gaining greater control over one's life, and current research primarily focuses on individual-level empowerment. However, this study explores community-level theories and characteristics that empower individuals and communities in household and neighborhood activism. The findings highlight the importance of mutual efficacy and social cohesion for participation in both types of activism, while self-efficacy is only associated with household activism. The study underscores the need for individual-level skill-building and community-building initiatives that foster a collective identity and mutual efficacy in order to promote activism.
