Summary: The development of tick resistance to chemical control has a significant impact on the economic of cattle farming worldwide. Reports on acaricide resistance in Rhipicephalus decoloratus, endemic to Africa and South Africa, are relatively scarce compared to its closely related species Rhipicephalus microplus which has a global distribution. Different acaricidal management strategies have led to the simultaneous development of resistance to various acaricide groups. Resistance to cypermethrin was more prevalent compared to amitraz or chlorfenvinphos. Resistance to amitraz and chlorfenvinphos was not significantly different. A high prevalence of resistance to cypermethrin was observed in R. decoloratus populations, while resistance to amitraz showed a lower prevalence. However, resistance to chlorfenvinphos decreased and most populations reverted to susceptibility. Multi-resistance was present in over 50% of populations, with the highest incidence in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Western Cape provinces.
