Green in-situ synthesis of silver coated textiles for wide hygiene and healthcare applications

Tsan-Liang Su et al.

Summary: In this study, antibacterial and biocompatible silver-based coatings were successfully obtained on cotton fabric using atmospheric pressure plasma mediated in situ silver reduction. The coatings showed strong antibacterial activity against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, as well as effective killing activity against preformed biofilms. Moreover, the coatings exhibited good biocompatibility to human tissue cells due to the significantly reduced silver loading. The environmentally friendly nature of this technology suggests potential wide applications in the health, hygiene, and medical fields.

Dual-functionalized luminescent/photodynamic composite fabrics: Synergistic antibacterial activity for self-disinfecting textiles

Fangyu Jin et al.

Summary: In this study, a scalable and facile method to immobilize long persistent phosphor and photosensitizer onto cotton fabric was reported. The resulting composite material exhibited superior antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus under visible-light illumination. Mechanistic studies showed enhanced singlet oxygen production, resulting in effective pathogen inactivation. In addition, the composite fabric possessed excellent abrasion resistance, mechanical strength, and color fastness. These findings suggest the potential of using long persistent phosphors in composite fabrics for infection control applications.

Measuring breathability and bacterial filtration efficiency of face masks in the pandemic context: A round robin study with proficiency testing among non-accredited laboratories

Francesco Tessarolo et al.

Summary: In this interlaboratory study, six Italian non-accredited laboratories tested the differential pressure and bacterial filtration efficiency of face masks. While some methodological non-conformities were found, overall, the laboratories performed satisfactorily during the pandemic emergency. Sample-to-sample variability affected measurement repeatability, and community masks showed higher uncertainty in bacterial filtration efficiency.
