Thiol-ene Click Chemistry Incorporates Hydroxyl Functionality on Polycyclooctene to Tune Properties

Roshni John Chethalen et al.

Summary: Polyolefins, the main components of plastic waste, lose their properties and value during conventional mechanical recycling. However, this study demonstrates the potential of functionalizing polyolefins using thiol-ene click chemistry to improve their properties. The reaction conditions can be manipulated to achieve different levels of functionalization.

Mechanical Properties of Polybutadiene Rubber with Oxidation Defects: from Molecular Simulations

Shuai Xi et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of polybutadiene rubber were studied using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. The presence of oxidation defects was found to have a negative impact on the rubber, leading to increased energy dissipation, decreased mechanical strength, and elasticity. Chain scission and re-crosslinking further weakened the mechanical properties, and stress concentration near the defects explained the microscopic mechanism of rubber fractures due to oxidation aging.

Nanoporous Block Copolymer Membranes with Enhanced Solvent Resistance Via UV-Mediated Cross-Linking Strategies

Florian Friess et al.

Summary: A block copolymer (P(BMA-co-BPMA-co-MMA)-b-P(HEMA)) was prepared via a two-step ATRP method and fabricated into a porous membrane using the SNIPS process. UV-mediated cross-linking was used to stabilize the membrane and increase the water flux. The study showed enhanced swelling resistance and water flux for the cross-linked BCP membranes compared to the noncross-linked ones.

Tandem ROMP/Hydrogenation Approach to Hydroxy-Telechelic Linear Polyethylene

Caitlin S. Sample et al.

Summary: In this study, a new hydroxyl-containing chain transfer agent (CTA) was developed, which allowed for the direct synthesis of hydroxy-telechelic polyalkenamers and subsequent hydrogenation using a streamlined catalytic approach. This method offers high atom economy, low waste generation, uses a green solvent, requires minimal catalyst quantity, and does not require additional purification steps.

Hydrophobic Recovery of Plasma-Hydrophilized Polyethylene Terephthalate Polymers

Gregor Primc et al.

Summary: Oxygen plasma is widely used to improve the wettability of polymers like PET, but the mechanisms leading to hydrophilic surfaces are not well understood. Plasma treatment can result in temporary wettability, with a tendency towards hydrophobic recovery. This paper reviews the mechanisms of hydrophobic recovery, while also discussing methods to suppress this effect. It recommends treatment with energetic ions and/or vacuum ultraviolet radiation to achieve stable hydrophilicity of PET samples. The influence of different plasma species on the formation and stability of highly hydrophilic surfaces in PET materials is also discussed.

Effects of the Three-Phase Crystallization Behavior on the Hydrolysis of Amorphous and Semicrystalline Poly(lactic acid)s

Wanwarang Limsukon et al.

Summary: The study investigated the hydrolysis of PLA with changes in three-phase model structures, showing that PLA with higher crystalline fractions had a slower hydrolysis rate, while the initial amount of rigid amorphous fractions accelerated the rate. Additionally, nanoconfined crystals from the melt-stretching method limited water molecule diffusion into PLA film, enhancing hydrolysis stability.
