GTOC 11: Results from Tsinghua University and Shanghai Institute of Satellite Engineering

Zhong Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents the methods and results used by Tsinghua University and Shanghai Institute of Satellite Engineering in the 11th Global Trajectory Optimization Competition (GTOC11). A three-stage procedure is employed to tackle the complex Dyson Spherebuilding problem. The procedure involves pre-analysis to reduce the search space, division of the globally optimal trajectory design problem into two sub-problems, and local optimization of asteroid sequence and flyby epochs. The final submission achieves significant results with motherships flying by 388 asteroids and 94% of the theoretical upper bound for the minimum mass of twelve power stations.

Dyson sphere building: On the design of the GTOC11 problem and summary of the results

Hong-Xin Shen et al.

Summary: The National University of Defense Technology and the Xi'an Satellite Control Center organized the 11th edition of the Global Trajectory Optimization Competition (GTOC11) in 2021. The competition aimed to bridge the gap between planetary and galactic civilizations by introducing an intermediate stellar civilization scenario. The participants were tasked with designing a Dyson sphere, a mega-structure that harnesses energy from a star. Challenges in astrodynamics such as orbit selection, asteroid flyby, and mass distribution were considered. 94 teams registered, 25 teams submitted solutions and passed verification.

Spanning tree trajectory optimization in the galaxy space

Tian-Jiao Zhang et al.

Summary: The 10th edition of the Global Trajectory Optimization Competition focused on the galaxy settlement problem, where competitors were tasked with designing trajectories for settler vessels to optimize multi-faceted merit. The winning team utilized a greedy search method and an improved solution by University of Jena, presenting a layout-first topology-second approach for efficient settlement tree search. The University of Jena also explored the potential of generating better settlement trees through greedy search compared to the winning solution.
