A scoping review of studies investigating hearing loss, social isolation and/or loneliness in adults

Anthea Bott et al.

Summary: Social isolation and loneliness are interrelated but independent constructs that threaten healthy aging and well-being and are thought to be associated with hearing loss. Most studies on the association between hearing loss and social isolation/loneliness come from large population-based datasets, with only a few intervention studies focusing on the outcomes of hearing aids on social isolation/loneliness. Further research is needed to examine the influence of hearing interventions, particularly hearing aids, on social isolation and loneliness, with a specific focus on individuals who identify as socially isolated and/or lonely.
