Burden of Glaucoma in the United Kingdom A Multicenter Analysis of United Kingdom Glaucoma Services

Dun Jack Fu et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to determine the spectrum of glaucoma-associated healthcare resource utilization among out-patients attending NHS hospital glaucoma clinics and the costs of managing glaucoma in this setting. Electronic medical record data from 43,742 eligible patients were analyzed, and the results showed that a significant proportion of patients managed in NHS glaucoma clinics may be considered at low risk of blindness and may be more appropriately managed with alternative, more affordable models of care.

Glaucoma Suspects: The Impact of Risk Factor-Driven Review Periods on Clinical Load, Diagnoses, and Healthcare

Jack Phu et al.

Summary: The study aimed to model the healthcare impact and clinical outcomes of different risk factor-driven review frequencies for glaucoma suspect patients. The less stringent/more frequent review criterion resulted in more diagnoses, fewer clinical visits, and reduced cost per diagnosis. The stringency of risk assessments for glaucoma suspects impacts review periods, healthcare costs, and diagnosis rates.

Summary: There is no definitive right answer on how to act in every specific situation, decisions must be personalized based on individual characteristics and circumstances. While seeking advice from experts is important, it's crucial to remember that expert opinions can also be fallible. Decision-making in diagnosis and treatment should always prioritize the unique patient, rather than blindly following standard recommendations.
