Revisiting the gonadotropic regulation of mammalian spermatogenesis: evolving lessons during the past decade

Indrashis Bhattacharya et al.

Summary: Spermatogenesis is a complex process of male germ cell division and differentiation regulated by gonadotropins FSH and LH. The somatic testicular cells, such as Sertoli cells, Leydig cells, and Peritubular myoid cells, play a crucial role in this process. FSH supports the expansion and differentiation of pre-meiotic germ cells, while LH stimulates the production of testosterone by Leydig cells. Testosterone promotes the formation of the blood-testis barrier, completion of germ cell meiosis, and sperm release.

Cellular Modifications in Spermatogenesis during Seasonal Testicular Regression: An Update Review in Mammals

Ester Beltran-Frutos et al.

Summary: The most common form of reproduction in mammals is seasonal reproduction, which is associated with testicular regression during non-breeding periods. Various cellular mechanisms, including apoptosis, desquamation of germ cells, and Sertoli cell apoptosis, are involved in testicular regression. Recent studies have shown that there are multiple patterns of seminiferous epithelium regression in seasonally breeding animals. There is no paradigmatic cellular mechanism applicable to all male mammals with seasonal reproduction.

The process of testicular regression also impacts the physiology of the epididymis of the bat Molossus molossus, although with a delay in epididymal response due to sperm storage

Emilia M. Soares et al.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the epididymis of the bat Molossus molossus, evaluating its morphological and morphometric variations, as well as aspects of its hormonal control during the annual reproductive cycle. The results showed that the epididymal physiology of M. molossus is impacted by total testicular regression and posterior recrudescence, with a delay in response due to sperm storage. The seasonal variations in epididymal physiology seem to be correlated to rainfall and photoperiod, regulated in part by the expression of the androgen receptor in epithelial cells.
